Automotive Material Handling Study

This document summarizes a study on improving the material handling system at Rane Automotive. Currently, materials are supplied in gunny bags, which leads to delays and inefficiencies. The objectives are to optimize lead times, vehicle turnaround times, and suggest improvements to increase productivity. The scope is to reduce inventory costs and delays in supplying materials to production. The methodology involves collecting data through observations and from the Material Management Department. Tools used include flow charts, CPM, and PERT to analyze the existing process and problems in order to recommend improvements.

INTRODUCTION

Material handling is the movement, storage, control and

protection of material, goods and products throughout the
process of manufacturing, distribution, consumption and
disposal.

Material handling system is an activity that uses the right

methods to provide the right amount of the right material at
the right place, at the right time, in the right position and at the
right cost.

NEED FOR THE STUDY

The organization is incurring damage to an extent of 15% due
to the improper existing material handling system. This leads
to increase in the production cost.
Currently, the bag wise unloading of items leads more time
delay and material collected through trolley have some fixed
quantity.
Constraints further, improper material handling leads to quality
variation during receipt and issues and must be delay in
production.
So, it is needed to reduce the damage percentage in order to
decrease the production cost.

GUNNY BAG ELIMINATION

Current Supply

Currently materials supplied in gunny bags and stored

in steel pallets

OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

To analyze the existing material handling system

To optimize the lead time for material movement

and vehicle turnaround time

To suggest an improvised material handling system

to increase productivity and working condition

SCOPE OF THE STUDY

The

study will improve the material handling system by

reducing the lead time of material movement in which it

further reduce the inventory holding cost to the
organization.
This

will eliminate the time delay on materials issue to

production. Readiness of materials towards immediate

supply to shop floor and need to maintain easy
accountability.
Easy

identification and improved 5S.

EXISTING PROCESS

Receipt in lorry

Storing in bins

Internal movement to stores

Transferring to bins

PRESENT PROBLEM OBTAINED

o

Bag wise unloading leads more time

100% counting through weighment

Invisible of materials in gunny bags

Quantity variation during receipt & Issue

Delay in Issue to production

Poor 5S by Gunny bags during storage

Manpower efficiency loss by multiple counting at

various stages

METHODOLOGY

Data Collection
It is done by the observation of flow of
material

movement

and

material

handling

equipment.

Secondary Data
It is collected from the Material Management

Department.

TOOLS

Flow Charts

Critical Path Method (CPM)

Program Evaluation & Review Technique (PERT)
