Introduction

What is an automobile: Automobile is a selfpropelled vehicle for transportation of goods and


passengers on the ground.
Over years, automobile became necessity from
luxury.
Nicholas Joseph cugnot is considered as the father
of automobile engineering.
Starting with year 1769 to 2014, they were cars of
different sizes, shapes and differently powered.

History of automobiles
Nicholas cugnot invented the first automobile powered by steam engine in
the year 1769.
In 1807, Francois Issac de Rivaz designed the first car with internal
combustion engine fuelled by hydrogen.
In 1861, Nikolaus August otto, build first gasoline-powered engine.
In 1876, Nikolaus August otto, build the first every 4-stroke petrol engine.
In 1886, Karl Benz invented 1 st petrol or gasoline powered car known as
Benz patent-motorwagon (motorcar).
In 1888, Andreas Flocken invented worlds 1 st real electric car.

Veteran era
In 1888, Karl benz started 1st automobile manufacturing unit called Benz,
in Germany.
In 1897, Wagenbau(later tatra) by Czech in cenetral eroupe, the prasident
automobil.
In 1893, Duryea motor wagon company was 1st automobile company in
united states.
In 1898, Louis Renault modified de dion-bouton with fixed drive shaft
and different, making it as the 1st hod rod and also getting Renault into
automotive race.
In 1903, Cadillac, Winton and ford started their production of cars in
united states.

Veteran era automobiles


1908-1927 Ford model T- most widely produced and available
4-seater car.
1910 Mercer raceabout first ever known sports car.
1910 1920 Bugatti type 13, 15,17, 22 and 23 racing and
touring model with advanced engineering and design.

Vintage era
1922-1939 Austin 7 most copied vehicles ever, serving as a
blue print to world, Bmw-Nissan.
1922-1931 Lancia Lambda very advanced car for the time
with loading bearing monocoque type body and independent
front suspension.
1924-1929, Bugatti type 35 most successful racing car of all
time, won 1,000 victories in five years.
1930 Cadillac v-16 most legendrey ultra-luxury car of the era.

Pre-WWII era
1932-1939 Alvis speed 20 first with all synchromesh gearbox.
1932-1948 Ford v-8 (model b) introduced flathead v8 engine.
1934-1938 Tatra 77 first car with aerodynamic design for
serial production.
1938-2003 Beetle, over 20million produced in 60years around
the world.

Post war era


1955-1976 Citroen DS aerodynamic design and innovative
technology.
1959-2000 mini (later know as mr.Beans car) the small car
manufactured for 4 decades.
1961-1975 Jaguar E- Type a classic sports car design of the
era.
1963-1989 Porsche 911 a sports car which was widely
popular for its speed and design.
1964-present Ford mustang - one of the best selling- cars of the
era

Modern era
1966-1992 Oldsmobile Toronado introduced electronic antilock braking system and airbag.
1973-present Mercedes-Benz S-class seat belt pretensioner and
electronic traction control system.
1997-present Toyota pirus best know as hybrid electric vehicle.
2008-present Tata nano an inexpensive passenger car for Indian
domestic market.
2010-present Nissan leaf and Chevrolet volt all electric car and
plug-in hybrid mass produced vehicles of its kind

Classification in terms of fuel type: petrol, diesel, Gas, electric
and hybrid.
Classification based on size and usage: Commonly used
method all over the world.
