ADVANTAGES OF PRO-CABLING OVER EXISTING AUTOCAD DRAWINGS

ES-00365 Rev A

Benefit achieved by using Pro-cabling

ES-00365 Rev A

Pro-cable
Advantage of Pro-cable
Parametric driven and effective Data management
No manual verification of proto is needed for identifying
the route path.
Routing can be optimized in pre-proto stage
Cable routing path can be assumed & iterated during
the design phase enabling efficient design optimization.
Assembly time reduced by identifying proper route path
of cables.
Disadvantage of Pro-cable
Cable routing time is comparatively high using Pro-E
ES-00365 Rev A

AutoCAD
Advantage of AutoCAD
Modification is easy.
No need for a trained manpower.

Disadvantage of AutoCAD

ES-00365 Rev A

Exact length of cable can not be determined

Poor Data management
Routing path cannot be found using the tool.
Rework time is high.
BOM and other components are non-parametric.

VARIOUS PHASES OF PRO/CABLING AND BRIEF EXPLANATIONS

5. FLATTENING

6. NAIL BOARD

Work phases Explanation:

Step 1: INPUT STUDY

Receive / Download inputs from Enovia. (OMS,ICD, EEs schematic, BOM, existing drawing e.t.c.,)
Estimate the work hours based on the number of cable/wire runs, availability of spools and symbols creation and complexity of
routing path.
List the Wire/Cable/Shrink tube spools need to be created in Library.
List the number of connectors and Parts need to be created in Pro/E Library.

Step 2A: SPOOLS & SYMBOLS CREATION

As per the list prepared in step 1, create the Wire/Cable spools in Pro/Diagram and Shrink tube spools in Pro/cabling as per
the vendors spec sheet.
As per the list prepared in step 1, create the Connectors/ Components in Pro/E based on the Vendors spec sheet. Ensure that
Wire terminal points should have co-ordinate system with Z-axis points towards the wire direction

Step 2B: ASSY FIXING

Check whether the existing top level assy is match with the OMS. If not, fix the Assy as per OMS after getting approval from KT
engineers.

ES-00365 Rev A

Work phases Explanation:

Step 3A: SCHEMATIC CREATION

Need to create the 2D schematic/wire line diagram based on the ICD or AutoCAD wire list input. Use the spools and connecter
symbols available in Intralink and created in the step 2A.
Wire list table will be automatically created based on the schematic.

Step 3B: SKELETON CREATION

Create the Skeleton model in the Pro/E assy which have:

Co-ordinate systems (CS) : Placement references of connectors, Ring Lugs, Ferrules e.t.c.,
Datum point/CS/datum sketches : Routing path for cables/Wires.
All the above references taken from the Harness reporting level assy.

Step 4: 3D ROUTING

Create the Harness.ASM file and Insert the skeleton model in that. Then assemble all the connectors and components in that
assembly with the help of CSs created in step 3B.
Then the schematic diagram created in Pro/Diagram will be imported to the Pro/Cabling. This will call out all the connectivity
information like wire/cable ids and ref_des details of the Schematic into Pro/Cabling.
Assign the reference designator to the connector parts in the 3D cable assembly.
Then route all the cable/wires based on routing path. While selecting the particular wire for routing,it will automatically
highlights the cable/wire terminals components.

Work phases Explanation:

Step 5: FLATTENING

Flatten the 3D cables into 2D for drawing/Nail board creation.

Check for the possibility of easy manufacturing aspects and bend the flattened harness and fit to the drawing sheet

Step 6: NAIL BOARD DIAGRAM

Provide the sufficient view to show the wire/cable and connector locations and Details.
Ref des for all the connectors and Components will be called out.
Provide the Parametric BOM with Exact Qty details. (BOM F/Ns match the Enovia BOM F/Ns)
Provide the exact Wire/Cable spool lengths.
Provide the Part number Balloons for components identification.
Place the wire list which was auto created by schematic.
If the Cable/Harness is too long use Break lines or move to next sheet.
Tie wraps are added manually using the Drawing symbols.

Step 7: ASSEMBLE THE HARNESS TO REPORTING ASSY

Assemble the created harness.asm assy to the reporting assy in Default position.

Pro Diagram KT best practices :

Need to create the wire terminated with ferrule which is connected to the Relay (Reports under Mech assy)
in next level assy.
Shield point -Ferrule
(Representation)
Ferrules are shown as the shield point.
Route the wire and terminate at the shield point (Ferrule)
Align (overlap) the Shield point to the Relay point. as shown
Group the Relay and Shield point.

Ref Des
Align straight

ES-00365 Rev A

12

Pro/Cabling KT best practices :

Wires should be routed as such it
should be straight inside the ferrule.

Tie-wrap

3rd Point
If the Bunch of wires connecting to a connecter, then create the
3rd point such as all those wires are passing thru it.
You can add the Tie-Wraps at those points if asked.

Shrink tube

2nd Point
1st Point

Shrink tube length

should be 1 +/- .2

So, always try to select the second

point in the Axis and not on CS.
ES-00365 Rev A

13

Flattening KT best practices :

The Larger length/portion of

the cable assy should be
flatten as straight.

The wires are flattened as shown above

with enough spaces between them for
nail placement.

For Jumper wires, always

minimize the bending radius to
around .1

If the wires to the connector comes

from different directions, Use insert
bend command and align as
shown.

Info: This can be controlled in

pro/cabling itself by adding a
common Point for the wires before
terminating to connector.
ES-00365 Rev A

Nail-Board KT best practices: Cable Assy

Schematics & Wire

list on the same
page if possible

Tolerance values for Pro/cabling assys.

Drawing format preferable is B or C

If the cable is Too long, we

can use the broken view.
(Drawing symbol is used for
showing the broken rep)

Side View of the

connectors, align it
to the main view.
ES-00365 Rev A

15

Nail-Board KT best practices: Harness Assy

For Harness:
1st sht : Harness assy
2nd sht: Wire list
3Rd sht : Schematics
Some cases, If space permits we can
place Schematics & Wire list on the
same page.

Drawing format preferable is D or E

Split the Qty balloons as above, so that we can easily

identify the respective parts.

Place the Tie wrap symbol, wherever

applicable with respect to the real
scenario.

Pin details on the SHT 2

(Next to Wire list table)
Label symbols

Ref.Des need to be called out

on all components

FYI:
In connector Pro/E model, the CSs
are wrongly numbered for pin
details. (Though there is no impact).
So, While creating PIN details in
drawings, please review the spec
sheet.
