Introduction
Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) refers to information and
communication technology, applied to network of users,
roads and vehicles that improve transport outcomes such as:
Transport Safety
Transport Productivity
Travel Reliability
Informed Travel Choices
Environmental Performance
Network Operation Resilience

What is ITS
The EU Directorate General for Mobility and
Transport define ITS as several combinations of
communication, computer and control technology
developed and applied in the domain of transport to
improve system performance, transport safety,
efficiency, productivity, and level of service,
environmental impacts, energy consumption, and
mobility.

Need for ITS

Interest in ITS comes from the problems caused by traffic
congestion and a synergy of new information technology
for simulation, real-time control, and communications
networks.
Traffic congestion has been increasing worldwide as a
result of increased motorization, urbanization,
population growth, and changes in population density.
Congestion reduces efficiency of transportation
infrastructure and increases travel time, air pollution,
and fuel consumption.
Many of the proposed ITS systems also involve
surveillance of the roadways.

Intelligent Transportation
Technologies
Some of the constituent technologies for ITS:
Wireless Communication
Computational technologies
Floating car data/floating cellular data
Sensing technologies
Video vehicle detection

1.Wireless Communication
Dedicated Short-Range Communications
(DSRC)
Short-range communications (less than 500 yards),
it uses IEEE 802.11 protocols
It offers communication between the vehicle and
the roadside in specific locations (for example toll
plazas) Applications such as Electronic Fee
Collection (EFC) will operate over DSRC. It is a subset of the RFID - technology (Radio-frequency
identification).

2.Computational technologies
Embed microprocessor to the vehicle, in order to
implement artificial intelligence, and ever-present
computing.

3.Floating Car Data/Floating Cellular

Data
Floating Car Data (FCD) is a method to determine the
average traffic speed on roads based on the
collection of localization data, speed, direction of
travel, and time information from driving vehicles.
Examples: WISERIDE is a traffic information as well as a
routing tool based on floating car data. Speed and
location data collected from GPS installed in taxis
formulate the traffic map of an entire city.

4.Sensing technologies and Inductive Loops

Sensing systems for Intelligent Transportation System
are vehicle and infrastructure based networked
systems
Pavement loops are use to sense the presence of
vehicle demand at intersections and parking lot
entrances.
Pressure pads are use to sense the presence of
pedestrians waiting to cross a roadway.

5.Video vehicle detection

Video vehicle detection (VVD) is the One of the
most widely used method.
Uses video cameras in automatic number plate
recognition. (ANPR: to read the license plates on
vehicles)

Automatic Road Enforcement

Speed cameras : that identify vehicles traveling over the legal speed
limit. Many such devices use radar to detect a vehicle's speed or
electromagnetic loops buried in each lane of the road.
Red light cameras: that detect vehicles that cross a stop line or
designated stopping place while a red traffic light is showing.
Bus lane cameras: that identify vehicles traveling in lanes reserved
for buses. In some jurisdictions, bus lanes can also be used by taxis
or vehicles engaged in car pooling.
Level crossing cameras: that identify vehicles crossing railways at
grade illegally.
Double white line cameras: that identify vehicles crossing these
lines.
High-occupancy vehicle lane cameras: for that identify vehicles
violating HOV requirements.
