The document proposes a battery-less remote control that uses piezoelectric materials to generate electricity from mechanical button presses. It notes that billions of batteries are wasted from remote controls each year. The design would incorporate a piezoelectric sheet beneath the buttons that generates voltage when pressed, powering an infrared LED to operate the device. Piezoelectric materials like PZT can generate enough voltage for 10ms per button press. The remote control would be energy efficient, environmentally friendly, and cost effective over time compared to periodic battery replacement. Future applications could include powering devices like cameras and medical equipment.

Battery-less Remote Control Motivation

Batteries take hundreds of years to decompose, posing a

serious threat to the public health and to the environment.

Considering 6.8 Billion people in the world (Census 2009) and
assuming that:
20% of them have a TV equipment.

We end up with an average of 1.4 Billions of television

remotes in the world.

Assuming two batteries per

remote and two battery changes

per year we have a total of
5.6 Billions batteries being
wasted every year.
This is a rough estimate without considering the batteries

used in remote controls of Sound Systems, Cable TV

boxes etc.

Our Idea goes like this : It pertains generally to a mechanism for capturing

mechanical energy and converting it to electrical

energy.
Using Piezoelectric materials we can eliminate the

external energy source.

Energy used in operating the device can itself be used

for powering it.

What are Piezoelectric Materials?

Piezoelectricity is the property possessed by some

materials of becoming electrically charged when subjected

to a mechanical stress.
Besides single crystals, ceramics, polymers, composites,

energy harvesting devices in the past have been fabricated

of polymers (PVDF) and ceramics (lead zirconate lead
titanate, PZT).

Why Use Piezoelectric Energy?

The requirement of an external power source as well as the

maintenance costs for periodic battery replacement and the

chemical waste of conventional batteries can be reduced
significantly.
It has high power density (0.001-90 mW/cm), and superior

efficiency (25-60 %) in the group of best harvesting

technologies.

Mechanism
A sheet of piezo electric material is placed beneath the

keypad of remote control or otherwise the keys itself are

made of the piezo material. When we press the keys we
are supplying the mechanical energy to the piezo material
,then the piezo material responds to it by generating
a voltage proportional to the force applied. Voltage
generated is used to radiate the infrared waves.
Piezo electric material like PZT(Lead Zirconate Titanate)
can generate a voltage up to 8V on single push for about
10ms. This is enough to radiate infrared as for most infrared
LEDs, the forward-voltage drop is 1.3 V.

Design and description of circuit:

The basic block diagram of the proposed model is shown in

Fig. below . It consists of 3 main blocks, (a) piezoelectric

power generation (b) rectification (c) infrared LED. AC
voltage is generated from the piezoelectric material which
is rectified by the rectification block.

The overall circuit diagram of the entire process:-

This fig shows a model of simple remote without applying

piezoelectric buttons. The slots under the buttons would
be used to attach piezoelectric layer.

State of piezoelectric module before and after key

depression

downward and upward motion of the film causes

vibrations in it. Since the film is itself a piezoelectric

material it generates electricity in the form of very low
voltage. This creates charges in the electrodes.

Cost Calculations
Cost of a common TV remote = Rs. 200 to Rs.1000

Cost per cm3 of PZT used is about Rs. 9.61

Volume of PZT material used below a button is about 5.89 mm3.
Gross amount of PZT material used in a remote would be Rs. 2.
Hence increase in cost will not be significant if PZT material is used.
Cost of a battery used in remote controls = Rs.7

No of batteries used in a year = 16 (approx.)

Cost of batteries used in a year = Rs. (7X16)= Rs. 112
Cost of batteries used in five year = Rs.(112X5)= Rs. 650
Hence over a long time (say five years) using PZT will be money saving.

Advantages : Energy efficient.

Environment friendly.

Cost effective over a long time period.

Conclusion and Future Scope

We can harvest energy in such a way that conventional

energy source of a battery can be replaced or can be

recharged during its operation.
Future possibilities include replacing batteries in video

cameras, still cameras, medical devices , power tools

etc.
