Describing Process
After practicing this unit, we should be able to :

1. Use expressions to describe how things you should be
able to :
2. Mention the steps in walking or operating things,
3. Use new words by adding suffixes in certain words,
4. Use various expressions activities in describing process.
1. Kompetensi dasar : Memahami instruksi-instruksi
sederhana.
2. Materi pembelajaran : Ungkapan-ungkapan untuk
menggambarkan proses kerja dan atau berfungsi suatu
alat.
A. Meaning
Describing a process mean explaining or
writing about how something is made or
something happens.

For examples : the instalation of computer or
other electonic devices, how to make a coffee/
cake/ glass/ batik, how to get a driving license,
how to start a business, etc.
Describing process used to :

1. Mention the steps to made or operated
things.
B. Expressions to Describe How Things
are Operated or Made
For example

Rizka : How do you start the copier? I dont know how to use it. Do you
know how to use it ?

Sarah : First, turn it on. Then, press the button to start it.

Rizka : Could you show me, please ?

Sarah : First, you plug it in like this. Then, you turn it on like this. After
that, you start it like this.

Rizka : Okay, thank you Sarah.


C. Mention the Steps
1. Before we do the steps, usually we show the material
needed.

2. Words to mention the steps in making or operation
things usually use :


First of all Next step / next
The first step is Then
The second step is After this/that
Secondly, Thirdly During
Finally / Lastly Etc
For example :

How to Make Instant Coffee


Ingredients :

Water
Glass
Instant coffee
Sugar (optional)
Cream or milk (optional)
Flavorings, such as vanilla extract, cinnamon, or cocoa
powder (optional)

Steps :

1. First, Put water in a kettle and boil it.
2. Then, Take the instant coffee and put it into the glass.

3. Pour boil of water into the glass about + 200 ml.
4. After this, if you want sweet coffee, add sugar or
flavorings.
5. Finally, Stir until evenly.
6. Coffee ready to serve.
D. Using Active or Passive Tense
Using the Passive

The passive of an active tense is formed by putting the verb to be into the same tense
as the active verb and adding the past participle of the active verb.
Passive = To be + Past Participle

Examples :

Active: The farmer sends the milk to the factory.
Passive: The milk is sent to the factory.

Active: We keep the books in the cupboard.
Passive: The books are kept in the cupboard.

Active: First, put the water in a cup.
Passive: First, the water is put in a cup.




Example: Making Paper

First, the tree is cut down. Then, the branches are removed. After that,
the trunk is taken to the sawmill. Here, the bark is removed from the
trunk and the trunks are sawn into logs. The logs are taken to the
paper mill and placed in the shredder. Here they are cut into small strips
and mixed with water. After that, they are heated and crushed.


Instructions and Directions ( Should be + past participle )

When you write instructions or directions in the passive you can use should
be .

Active: Place the container on the mat.
Passive: The container should be placed on a mat.

Active: Insert the coins slowly.
Passive: The coins should be inserted slowly.

E. Addition The Suffixes Able/Ible
The addition of the suffixes able/ible means
can be.

For example

to count : countable (can be counted)
uncountable (cant be counted)
