This document summarizes preliminary studies on using high-performance concretes (HPC) for pavements. HPC can have enhanced properties like higher strength, lower permeability, and greater resistance to chemical attacks. The study aims to determine the properties of HPC ingredients and arrive at mix proportions for silica fume concrete and high-volume fly ash concrete. Materials being tested include cement, fly ash, fine aggregate, coarse aggregate, and superplasticizers. Tests are being conducted on these materials according to appropriate standards. Mix designs have been developed for a conventional M40 concrete and HPC mixes. Compressive strength testing of cubes made with these mixes will be conducted at 56 days.

PRELIMINARY STUDIES ON
HPCs FOR PAVEMENTS
BY PANKAJAKSHI M G I-semester M.E., (Civil) (Major: Highway Engineering)
Under the guidance of Dr. M.S. AMARNATH Professor Bangalore University, Bangalore-560 056 2012 2013.
HIGH PERFORMANCE CEMENT CONCRETE HPCC can be defined as concrete with enhanced properties such as higher compressive, higher flexural strength, lower permeability, lower heat generation, greater resistance to alkali silica reaction and greater resistance to sulphate attack because of the addition of admixture.
NEED FOR THE STUDY Drastical increase in traffic playing on the surface, demanding better and stronger pavement. Need for exploring pavement alternatives with improved strength properties Objective To determine the properties of ingredient of High performance cement concrete To arrive at the mix proportion of HPCC (Silica fume concrete, High volume fly ash concrete ) EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION Some special types of high performance cement concrete Silica fume concrete High volume fly ash concrete Ground granulated blast furnace slag concrete Fiber reinforced concrete
Silica fume concrete is defined as a mix that contains replacement of cement by Silica fume. Silica fume concrete can reach the same or greater design strength as normal concrete.
MATERIALS USED IN THE STUDY Cement - 53grade cement conforming to IS: 12269-1987. Fly ash - Class F fly ash used is obtained from Raichur thermal power station. Fine aggregate - Locally available river sand is used as fine aggregate. The properties of the fine aggregates are determined by conducting tests as per IS: 2386-part 3 and IS 383-1970. Coarse aggregates - Locally available crushed granite coarse aggregates are used in this study the tests for physical properties on coarse aggregates are conducted as per IS: 383-1970. Super-plasticizer - Rheo Build-816 and conplast 432sp TESTS ON CEMENT SL. No Test Results Requirements as per IS: 12269-1987 1. Normal Consistency 37% - 2.
