Peter Norton's Introduction To Computers: Productivity Software

This document provides an overview of productivity software, including word processing, spreadsheet, database management, and presentation programs. It describes the basic functions of each type of software such as creating documents and slides, entering different types of data into spreadsheets, and using databases to store and relate records across multiple tables. The learning objectives at the end assess understanding of the key concepts covered in the chapter like the different types of documents, editing, formatting, and structures that each productivity software enables.

Name three types of documents you can create with word
processing software.
Name two types of editing and three types of formatting you can
do in a word processor.
Name and describe the four types of data that can be entered in a
worksheet.
Explain how cell addresses are used in spreadsheet programs.
Learning Objectives: (Cont.)
Name the two most common types of database structrues
and differentiate them.
List six important data-management functions that can be
performed in a DBMS.
Describe at least six standard slide layouts provided by
presentation programs.
List at least four types of formatting that can be done on
slides in a presentation program.
Productivity Software:
Word Processing Software
Spreadsheet Programs
Database Management Systems
Presentation Programs
Word Processing Software - used
to create documents that consist
primarily of text, from simple
letters and memos to brochures,
resumes, and long documents.

Spreadsheet Software - a software
tool for entering, calculating,
manipulating, and analyzing sets of
numbers.
Entering Data into a
Spreadsheet:

What-if Analysis - the process of
using a spreadsheet to test how
alternative scenarios affect numeric
results.
Database Management Systems -
enables users to create database
tables and provides multiple users
with access to data.
Field - a piece of data.

Record - a group of fields.

File - a group of records.
Types of fields
(Lauras record contains several fields)
(One file is made up of Lauras, Bills and Peters records)
Types of Databases:
Relational
Hierarchical

Network
Object-oriented
A common field existing
in any two tables creates
a relationship between
the tables. For instance, a
Customer ID Number field
in both a customers table
and an orders table links the
two tables. The relational
database structure is the
most prevalent in today's
organizations

Presentation Software - enables
the user to create and edit colorful,
compelling presentations, which
can be displayed in a variety of
ways and used to support any type
of discussion.
