A new way of dictation

What is dictogloss?

An integrated skills technique for language

learning in which students work together to create

a constructed version of a text read to them by their

teacher.
The procedure of Dictogloss

Find or create a text
Model a dictogloss
Create interest
Review vocab.
Read the dictogloss
Read it a second time
Ss write key words
Ss pair up or group
Ss reconstruct the dictogloss
Sentences are compared

Modeling the steps
We will try a new activity called Dictogloss today
I will read to you a short text (show from afar) and you
will note down key words that will help you later to
build the text up again from memory.

Write: Lucy is an actress and a part-time waitress.

is an and a

Lucy actress part-time waitress.
Give another example

Elicit and underline key words:

In the last ten years, Hannah has been married three
times, and has lived in Italy, Egypt, France and
Australia.
Organize students into pairs or groups.

Ask them to put the pens down , relax and listen!

Read the text with a normal speed.

Tell them you will read it again.

Ask them to take their pens and note down key words.

Ask them not to panic and not to stop when they miss
something.

Read again with the same speed.

Ask them to work with a partner or within their group
to build up the text.

Monitor

In case of trouble, write questions on the board to help
them.

Compare students versions with the original

Dictogloss versus Dictation!

Learner Autonomy
Traditional Dictogloss
Teacher dictates passage and
the students must write
exactly what is said OR it is
WRONG.

Students reconstruct their
own version
Co-operation among learners
Traditional Dictogloss
Individual activity good
student succeed and poor
students fail
Students work alone initially
when listening but then work
collaboratively to complete
the product team work
skills are developed
Focus on meaning
Traditional Dictogloss
Focus was on form: grammar
and spelling
Seeks to combine a focus on
meaning with a focus on form
Diversity
Traditional Dictogloss
Work alone Different students take
different notes from each
other. In the group, they can
take advantage of this as
other information helps to fill
the gaps
Thinking Skills
Traditional Dictogloss
Copy, dont think. Students think critically
about what is read and about
how best to frame what is
written
Alternative assessment
Traditional Dictogloss
Marks were deducted for
wrong answers
Provides an opportunity for
real time observation. As
students discuss, teachers can
listen and observe students
thinking
Teachers as co-learners
Traditional Dictogloss
Teacher knows everything. From observing students, we
can apply what we learn in
order to teach better.

VARIATIONS

1- STUDENT CONTROLLED
DICTATION

Ss. use T as a tape recorder.
T reads once
T reads again till someone
says stop.
If no-one says stop, rewind
etc. T reads faster.
Each student can stop the T
once.

A FOX one day fell into a deep well and could find no
way out.

A thirsty Goat, came to the same well, and seeing the
Fox, asked if the water was good.

"It's wonderful," shouted the fox from the bottom of
the well. "Come on down."

The Goat, thinking only of his thirst, jumped down,
but just as he drank, he realised he was trapped!!

2- STUDENT-STUDENT
DICTATION
Can be used when Ss are
familiar with dictogloss
Divide a long text
If texts are difficult Ss meet
and discuss for
understanding
Ss read in turns
Ss reconstruct
Ss compare with the original

3- DICTOGLOSS
SUMMARIES

Ss focus on key ideas
T may ask not to take any
notes
T can use cues to help
comprehension
Sketches, flow charts, photos,
mind maps etc.
Ss summarize
A tropical cyclone smashed into Australias northeast
coast yesterday, bringing winds of up to 200 kph which
