Introduction of Intranet
An internet is a network inside an organization that uses
Internet technologies to provide an internet like environment
within the enterprise.
Internet technologies such as web browser and server, HTML,
etc are used for information sharing, communications, and
support of business processes.
Intranet is protected by security measures such as password,
firewalls so it can be used by authorized users through internet.
A companys intranet can also be accessed through the intranets
of customers, suppliers, and other business partner via extranet
links.
Intranets are also being used as corporate culture-change
platforms.
For example, large numbers of employees discussing key
issues in an intranet forum application could lead to new ideas
in management, productivity, quality, and other corporate
issues.
Business value of intranets
Organizations are implementing a broad range of
internet uses.
Companies organize intranet applications is to group
them conceptually into a user service that reflect the
basic services that intranet offer to their users
Intranets can help users to locate and view
information faster and use applications relevant to
their roles and responsibilities.

Communication & Collaboration :
Intranet can significantly improve communications and collaboration
within an enterprise
For example we can use our intranet browser and our PC to send and
receive e-mail, voice mail, pages etc and to communicate with others
within our organization.
Web Publishing :
The comparative ease, attractivness, and lower cost of publishing and
accessing multimedia business information internally via intranet.
Web sites have been the primary reasons for the explosive growth in the
use of intranets in business.

Business operations and management :
Intranets are also being used as the platform for
developing and deploying critical business applications
to support business operations and managerial decision
making.
For example many companies are developing custom
applications like order processing, inventory control,
sales management etc. which can be implemented on
intranets and internet.

Intranet portals management :
Organizations employ IT and IS professionals to manage
the functions of intranet along with maintaining various
hardware and software components necessary for
successful operations.
For example A network administrator must manage
the access of users via password and other security
mechanicsms to ensure that each user is able to use the
intranet productively

Extranets are network links that use internet
technologies to interconnect the intranet of a business
with the intranets of its customers, suppliers, or other
business partners.
Companies can establish direct private network links
among themselves or create private, secure internet
links called virtual private network
For example, military networks of different security
levels may map onto a common military radio
transmission system that never connects to the
Internet.
Consultants and contractors can use the extranet to
facilitate the design of new system or provide
outsourcing services.
The suppliers of the organization can use the extranet
to ensure that the raw materials necessary for the
organization to function are in stock or delivered in a
timely fashion
Extranet links the organization to the outside world in
a manner that improves the way it does business.
