What is a software ?
Software represents the set of the
programs that govern the operation of a
computer system and make the
hardware run.

Types of software
System software
System software is the software used to
manage and control the hardware
components and which allow interaction
between the hardware and the other
types of software.

Operating system
An operating system (OS) is a collection of
software that manages computer
hardware resources and provides
common services for computer programs.
Why OS is very important.



Application software
Applications

as 'apps') are
designed to allow
the user of the
system complete a
specific task or set of
tasks. They include
programs such as
web browsers, office
software, games and
so on
Application software is divided
into two parts :
1. Packages
2. Utility software

Packages

Types of Packages :
1. Editor
2. Screen Editor
3. Word processors
4. Electronic Spreadsheets
5. Database system
6. Graphics Packages

Editor:
These are interactive programs stored in the memory
of the computer.
Screen Editor:
This editor is used for designing.

Word processor:
A word processor is a computer program that enable
you to create ,edit , print and save documents for
future revision and retrieval.

Electronic Spreadsheets:
A spreadsheet is a matrix of rows and columns.





Utilities
1. A utility software is a part of the
operating system which is designed
to provide a small range of useful
tasks.
2. A utility is a small task such as disk
fragmentation virus scanning ,
registry cleaning etc.
ADVANTAGES OF A UTILITY
SOFTWARE :




Memory testers check for memory failures.
Network utilities analyze the computer's network
connectivity, configure network settings, check data
transfer or log events.

Registry cleaners clean and optimize the Windows
registry by removing old registry keys that are no longer
in use.
Screensavers were desired to prevent phosphor burn-
in on CRT and plasma computer monitors by blanking
the screen or filling it with moving images or patterns
when the computer is not in use. Contemporary
screensavers are used primarily for entertainment or
security.

Types of utility software:
Anti-virus utilities scan for computer viruses
Archivers output a stream or a single file when
provided with a directory or a set of files. Archive
utilities, unlike archive suites, usually do not include
compression or encryption capabilities. Some
archive utilities may even have a separate un-
archive utility for the reverse operation.
Backup software can make copies of all information
stored on a disk and restore either the entire disk
(e.g. in an event of disk failure) or selected files (e.g.
in an event of accidental deletion).
