Vision,

Mission, Goals
& Objectives
Planning phase
June 7, 2014
Learning outcomes
By the end of this session we will be able to ;
Develop our understanding regarding vision and
mission statement.
Differentiate between vision and mission
statement.
Develop vision and mission statement for MPC
A pathway leading to results
1. Create a shared vision
2. Develop a mission statement
3. Identify goals
4. Set objectives
5. Determine projects and
activities
6. Establish a plan of action
7. Create a detailed work plan

8. Assign resources
9. Implement work plan
10. Evaluate results
11. Report accomplishments
12. Review mission
13. Reaffirm mission
14. Repeat from Step 3.
Core Values
Basic underlying foundation for both the vision
and mission are our core values.
Core values: principles and standards at the very center of
our character, and from which we will not budge or stray.
Core values form the basis for our beliefs about life,
ourselves and those around us, and the human potential of
ourselves and others.
Values and beliefs form our attitudes and guide our
behavior.
The behaviors we engage in are what people around us
see, along with our skills and actions.
Core Values
Defining your core values first will help you get
your priorities in order (vision, mission, goals,
objectives)
Example of a farm businesses core values:
efficiency
family
safety
respect for others
Values
Values are beliefs that your organizations members hold in
common and endeavor to put into practice
Values guide your organizations
members in performing their work

They answer the question What are
the basic beliefs that we share as an
organization?

Adherence to the organizations values,
walking the talk, fosters individual and
organizational integrity

To become a world leader at
connecting people to wildlife and
conservation

To become the most influential
bridge between investors and
entrepreneurs

To refresh the world, inspire
moments of optimism and
happiness and make a difference
Vision
Vision is a concept, that refers to ones
mental image of the future. Vision
refers to the optimum future state of
affairs that one can imagine for an
individual or for an institution. (Wallace,
Engel et al, 1997)

Vision

description of something in the future

mental perception of the kind of environment an
individual, or an organization, aspires to create
within a broad time horizon and the underlying
conditions for the actualization of this perception
Vision

individual, or an organization, aspires to create
within a broad time horizon and the underlying
conditions for the actualization of this perception
Coming together
The success of a group may depend upon
bringing people together, both physically and
philosophically.
Our view of the world is influenced by the values
we hold (individual and collaborative values).
Values become the basis for our personal vision,
mission, goals, objectives and actions.
Group needs to reconcile differing perspectives,
find common ground and create a shared vision

Vision
A vision is an outline of a desired state to be
attained within a specific period, although it
is a statement about an ideal, it is
nevertheless expected to be achievable
because it is based on sound understanding
of prevailing conditions together with realistic
assessment of the interventionist capabilities
of the organization.
(Harlech-Jones, n. d.)

Example of Vision statement
Crescent Girls School Singapore
The vision of the Tablet PC program at the Crescent Girls
School in Singapore is to connect teachers and students with
a systematic and comprehensive use of technology
combined with a rigorous and relevant curriculum and a
career preparation component. Tablet PCs serve as the
catalyst in the transition from traditional learning to a student-
centered, problem solving, project-driven approach that will
carry students well into the next century. Laptops enable
learning to go beyond the school walls and provide access to
worldwide resources. download.microsoft.com/.../1-Plan_MS_1to1_vision-
statement.pdf
Cont
Beaufort County School District South Carolina,
United States
In a voluntary program, students will use notebook
computers in the classroom and at home to expand
their learning opportunities beyond the traditional
schoolhouse walls and beyond the traditional school
day, to help them open new windows on the world.
Believing that technology should serve all, a non-
profit community foundation will provide subsidies to
ensure that all students have equal access to
computers, so that participation is based on the
desire to learn, not the ability to pay

Mission
Mission
Organizations relate their existence to satisfying a
particular need of the society. They do it in terms of
their mission.

Mission is a statement which defines the role that
an organization plays in a society.

It refers to the particular need of that society for
instance, its information needs.
Defining Mission

essential purpose of the organization, concerning
particularly why it is in existence, the nature of the
business it is in, and the customers it seeks to serve
and satisfy.

purpose or reason for the organizations existence.

mission is an enduring statement of purpose that
distinguishes one firm from other similar firm.
Mission
Mission describes the overarching purpose of the organization
the reason it exists.
Who are you, as an
organization?

Why do you exist?

What do you do?

Who do you serve?
Purpose: sentence that describe the end result
An infinitive that indicates a change in
status
An identification of the problem or
condition to be changed

A description of the primary means used to
accomplish that purpose
In short the mission describes the
product, market and technological areas
of emphasis for the business.
Create your mission statement
What is the problem that exists to be solved?

Who is affected by the problem?

How would the community be improved, changed or different if your
organizations efforts were successful?

What is the purpose of your organization?

Why does it exist?

What is the ultimate outcome or result you are hoping to achieve?
Create your mission statement
What business are you in?

What do you do to fulfill your purpose?

What is the broadest way in which you could state your work?

For whom do you work?

Who is your target population, your audience, your market?

Where do you work?

What are your geographic boundaries?
Mission
The mission statement of an organization is
normally short, to the point, and contains the
following elements:
Provides a concise statement of why the organization
exists, and what it is to achieve;
States the purpose and identity of the organization;
Defines the institution's values and philosophy; and
Describes how the organization will serve those
affected by its work.

Cont.
Unlike the vision statement, a statement focusing on
the future, the business mission statement focuses
on the current farm business. The business mission
statement outlines who we are, what we do, and for
whom we do it. It provides a concise summary of the
farm businesss purpose. The mission statement
deals with what the farm business is about and why.

Mission Statement
Our mission is to develop young men with active
and creative minds, a sense of understanding and
compassion for others, and the courage to act on
their beliefs. We stress the total development of
each child: spiritual, moral, intellectual, social,
emotional, and physical. Princeton Academy of the Sacred
Heart101 Drake's Corner Road Princeton, NJ 08540
Example of Mission Statements
Mission Statement
Community School recognizes that each child is
an individual; that all children are creative; that all
children need to succeed. Therefore, Community
School respects the individual needs of children;
fosters a caring and creative environment; and
emphasizes the social, emotional, physical,
intellectual development of each child. Community
School 7815 Williamson Rd. Roanoke,
Characteristics
1. Feasible
2. Precise
3. Clear
4. Motivating
5. Distinctive
6. Indicates major components of strategy

Need for an explicit mission
To ensure unanimity of purpose within the organization.
To provide a basis for motivating the use of the
organizations resources.
To develop a basis, or standard, for allocating
organizational resources.
To establish a general tone or organization climate.
To serve as a focal point for those who can identify with
the organizations purpose and direction.

How to develop vision statement
1. Get the right people on the bus
2. Preparation
3. Determine appropriate "input" to the vision.
4. Set the stage.
5. Create and use a process that ensures full participation
creativity, and efficiency.
6. Re-convene the group and review the draft vision
statement.
7. Communicate the vision and begin to make it a reality.

How to develop mission statement
To create your mission statement, first identify your
organization's "winning idea".
This is the idea or approach that will make your organization
stand out from its competitors, and is the reason that customers
will come to you and not your competitors (see tip below).
Next identify the key measures of your success. Make sure you
choose the most important measures (and not too many of
them!)
Combine your winning idea and success measures into a
tangible and measurable goal.
Refine the words until you have a concise and precise
statement of your mission, which expresses your ideas,
measures and desired result.

Vision vs. Mission
The vision is more broad and future oriented the goal on
the horizon
The mission is more focused how you will get to the
horizon
A mission statement tells what business you are in and
what products and services you will offer. It is a clear
statement of purpose. A mission statement may last for
decades.
A vision transforms the organization. It provides a picture of
what could be. It is a catalyst that can impel an organization
to move toward that dream. As dreams come true or
realities change, visions change. It is a goal of the highest
order.

Importance of vision and mission
An exciting, inspirational vision
Challenges and motivates workforce
Arouses strong sense of organizational purpose
Induces employee buy-in
Galvanizes people to live the organization

.
Food for thought
If you think of vision and mission as an
organization's head and heart, the
values it holds are its soul.
