About one-fifth of Indias population is in the
adolescent age group of 1019 years. However, despite
adolescents being a huge segment of the population, policies and programs in India
have focused very little effort on the adolescent group.
Unfortunately, the special needs of adolescents are rarely
addressed by the educational, health, and family welfare
programs in India.

Life skills enable individuals to translate knowledge,
attitudes and values into
actual abilities i.e. "what to do and
how to do it".

Life skills are Abilities that enable individuals
to behave in healthy ways, given the desire to do so
and given the scope and opportunity to do so.

There are research indications that teaching skills in this
way, as part of broad-based life skills programmes,
is an effective approach for primary prevention
education
(Errecart et al., 1991; Perry and Kelder, 1992; Caplan et al., 1992).

Personality Development:
PROGRAM COMPONENTS

This component of the life skills program focuses on two
main skills namely cognitive skills and social skills.
Cognitive skills are skills related to thinking and social
skills are skills related to dealing with others.
While thinking skills relate to reflection at a personal
level, social skills include interpersonal skills and do not
necessarily depend on logical thinking.

Value Education
PROGRAM COMPONENTS
Values are those principles or standards, which help to
better the quality of life. Values codify the dos and don'ts
of behaviour. They form the basis of character formation
and personality development.
Adolescence, being the time when a person forms
independent ideologies and abstract thoughts, becomes
the most crucial phase for instilling value based
education.
