Fulfil statutory duties, e.g. attendance. Complete administrative duties, e.g. blobs/credits, timetables, fire drills, notices. Monitor and review academic progress. Write reports and set targets. Organize Form Room, e.g. notices, pigeon-holes. Set the tone for the day, by creating a positive ethos: establishing/encouraging good relationships, and developing both a form group and a school spirit/identity. Be a good role-model in behaviour and outline expectations. Deal with incidents, imposing sanctions and offering coping strategies. Handle individuals and groups. Liaise with parents and other staff over academic or pastoral concerns. Make and maintain personal contact: know each tutee, e.g. personal circumstances, relationships, hobbies, achievements. Teach study skills, organization, mutual respect. Encourage reading/general knowledge/interest in current affairs, etc.

Juggling Act
So how do I manage to be all of these things with all the other stuff that I have to do at school like planning my lessons, actually teaching and the mountains of marking I have?
We are going to watch a short film where an NQT discusses experiences with his form and explores strategies to juggle being an effective form tutor and a subject teacher.

How can a Form Tutor build and extend successful relationships with a form? Competitions Achievements Board Pupils to Speak on hobbies or Hot Topics Give rewards at the end of the week based on monitoring, e.g. Boy and Girl of the Week Pupils to be encouraged to take responsibility for Form Room Show that you care: attend concerts, matches, plays, evensong, outside activities or lessons!
