HISTORICAL OVERVIEW

DTS Digital Sound


• Developed by Terry Beard along with Jim Ketcham in mid-
1980s.
• Guided by two convictions :
• Digital sound was for all theatres.
• Easier, less expensive, more reliable, more flexible, and
higher in quality delivering of audio data.
Dolby Digital
• Creators: Dolby Laboratories in 1987.
• Used more flexible 'adaptive' coding system called AC-3.

DTS Digital Sound


 Six digital audio channels.
 Recorded on to a CD-ROM along with time-code track.
 Miniature reader empowered by main electronic package
mounted on the projector.
 Code from reader is fed to the DTS processor.

Dolby Digital
 Three front channels and a surround-sound channel.

 Uses an advanced noise-reduction process.

• Offers higher than CD-resolution audio within the Bandwidth.
• Soundtrack present on separate CD.
• Operates at a rate of 1536 kb/s.

Dolby Digital
• Reduces Bandwidth to reproduce multi channel audio.
• Places its digital soundtrack as optical marking.
• Depends on design of codec.
