Software Defined Radio

Software defined radio allows communication standards to migrate by making radio configuration flexible through software. It provides software control over modulation techniques, frequency bands, security functions, and waveform requirements of current and evolving standards over a broad frequency range. Software defined radios are classified into tiers based on their capabilities, with Tier 0 being hardware radios and Tier 3 being ideal software radios that require no external components. Software defined radio provides benefits like reduced costs, flexibility to incorporate new features, and ubiquitous connectivity. Technologies like antennas, signal processing, and batteries must continue advancing to fully realize the capabilities of software defined radio in the future.
