Presidential elections are held every 6th year and the same president can be elected only twice consequently. President- Sauli Niinist

History
Finland has been inhabited for 11000 years. Finland was a part of Sweden until 1809 when Russia took over and Finland was announced to be the autonomous Grand Duchy of Finland. The Lutheran religion dominated. Finnish nationalism evolved and caused Finns to claim independancy. Finland became independent 6th of December, 1917.

In the second World War Finland fought against The Soviet Union twice. Finland was allies with Germany during the second world war but after Germany was invaded, Finland quickly changed to ally with the allied countries. Finland joined EU in 1995

Economics
Finlands largest and most known company is Nokia Largest industries are electronics (22%), metal products (21%) and forest industry (13%) Energy is a key factor in Finnish economy because of harsh winters. All industries and housing need heating which makes Finland a very energy independent country.

Healthcare
Finnish public healthcare is almost free. One has to pay small amounts for doctor appointments or hospital treatment. The health care system is mainly financed by tax payers. More and more of healthcare is moving to private sector. Private sector has no queues but can be hundreds of times more expensive. Life expectancy is 82 years for women and 75 years for men.

School
Kids up to 16 years old go to school from Monday to Friday. School days last about 5 to 7 hours on average. Lessons are 45 minutes long with a 15 minute brake between every lesson. After finishing 9th grade, one may decide if they want to go to college, vocational school or quit studying because school is no longer compulsory. Vocational school prepares one to work in one certain profession (eg. Car repairman, chef). College (lukio) mainly prepares one for studies in university. Every school in Finland is free of charge. Almost all schools are ran by municipalities or state. Colleges may have differences in entry requirements.

Culture 1
Music is valued and a lot of education is offered. Finlands most known composer is Jean Sibelius (1865-1957). Finland is known for its designs, such as the Aalto line, Moomin products, Marimekko fabrics and Angry Birds trademark

Culture 2
The Finnish culture has a lot of twists and turns to it because Finland has been a part of both Russia and Sweden. Sauna Most Finnish people enjoy the sauna experience and have a sauna in their home. Sauna is a room heated to about 80 degrees celsius and in which people relax. Sauna culture can be dated back to 5000 BC. Mkki Many Finnish families own a cottage out somewhere further away from city life and everyday life. The cottages are usually located near the sea or a lake. There is always a sauna at ones cottage.

Nature
The Finnish nature is important to Finns. Finlands nature varies from decidious forest in the south to coniferous forest in the north. 73% of Finnish area is forest. Finnish tunturi is a unique environment because of its harsh conditions. The national bird of Finland is the swan and the national animal is the brown bear.
