Apostu Iuliana-Andreea - Ciuban Sebastian - Mãciucã Rodica - Mitran Teodora

This document discusses satellite navigation systems for aviation. It provides an overview of GPS and how it determines position using signals from satellites. It describes factors that can disturb GPS signals like radio interference. It also discusses augmentation systems like DGPS and EGNOS that improve GPS accuracy for aviation. EGNOS uses geostationary satellites and ground stations to broadcast accuracy data for GPS signals. The advantages of satellite navigation for aviation are also listed, including continuous positioning, increased safety, and reduced fuel consumption.

1. Introduction
GPS (Global Positioning System) is a system of satellite navigation which allows determination of every globe position with help from signals received from satellites. The measurement accuracy with such a system varies between 30 meters (military) and 150 meters (commercial).

2. Operating principles
The satellites continuously broadcast signals that contain information about their position, the status and the exact time. Knowing these information, we can determine the distance and we can calculate the position of the object using the trilateration method.

3. Disturbance
Interference with radio broadcasts on UHF Plants VOR (VHF Omnidirectional Range) and DME (Distance Measuring Equipment) May lose satellite position on curves Elements of structure Electromagnetic and atmospheric disturbance

4. Augmentation systems
Basic GPS gear evolved through the next systems: -ABAS (Aircraft Based Augmentation System) -SBAS (Satellite Based Augmentation System) -GBAS (Ground Based Augmentation System).

5. Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS)

For improving the accuracy in determining the position an improved GPS system named DGPS has been developed. The information received from two or more receptors are compared every moment with precise data from a station.

6. European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service (EGNOS)

EGNOS is the first project in the GNSS field of Europe being the precursor of GALILEO.

Being composed from 3 geostationary satellites and a network of 3 fixed stations positioned on ground, EGNOS fulfills his purpose by broadcasting information that contain the sent GPS signals accuracy and confidence.

Advantages offered by EGNOS

Safety improvement during flight operations. Minimizing the operational cost by eliminating the need for auxiliary navigational gear in airports. It allows the aircraft to land in hard weather conditions It reduces the fuel consumption and the CO2 emissions It increases the quality of horizontal and vertical guiding of the aircraft Free service provided

7. Advantages of satellite navigation in aviation

Continuous and accurate positioning in every flight stage Free service provided Increases the safety level during specific flight operations Reduces the fuel consumption Better route planning Continuous monitoring of aircrafts
