GP3 (Delta Modulation)
GP3 (Delta Modulation)
INTRODUCTION
Modulation is defined as the process of modifying a
carrier wave (radio wave) systematically by the modulating signal. This process makes the signal suitable for the transmission and compatible with the channel. The resultant signal is called the modulated signal.
Delta Modulation is a simple and efficient method of
analog-to-digital conversion where data is to be transmitted via a serial digital communication channel. Delta modulation can be used for digitizing voice for secure, reliable communications and for voice input-output in data processing.
PROBLEM STATEMENT
To design, implement and analyse a typical analog source encoding technique using delta modulation. The deliverables include the design and implementation of a simple, linear delta-modulator as well as the demonstration of various characteristics phenomena of delta modulation, e.g. slope overload and granular quantization noise.
The above diagram shows a delta-modulation encoder; it is known as a single integration modulator. The input signal is compared to the integrated output pulses and the delta (difference) signal is applied to the quantizer. The quantizer generates a positive pulse when the difference signal is negative, and a negative pulse when the difference signal is positive. This difference signal moves the integrator step by step closer to the present value input, tracking the derivative of the input signal. A 1" indicates that a positive excursion has occurred since the last sample, and a "0" indicates that a negative excursion( has occurred since the last sample.

APPLICATIONS
Telecommunications: Digitized signals are easily routed and multiplexed with low cost digital gates. Voice channels may be easily added to existing multiplexed digital data transmission systems. The digital signals are much more immune to crosstalk and noise when transmitted over long distances by wire, R.F., or optical paths. Secure Communications: Digital data can be quite securely encrypted using fairly simple standard hardware. Scrambled speech for audio channels may also be accomplished by encoding into a shift register then selecting different segments of the shifted data in pseudo-random fashion and decoding it.
