Control Principle Presentation: System Response For Second Order System

This document summarizes the four types of second order systems: underdamped response, critically damped response, overdamped response, and undamped response. It provides the mathematical formulas to calculate the damping coefficient ratio ξ for each type. Examples of how these responses relate to a car braking at a traffic light are given: an underdamped response is stopping past the white line, a critically damped response is stopping exactly at the white line, and an overdamped response is stopping before the white line. The document was presented by a group of six students.

TYPE OF SECOND ORDER
SYSTEMS
• There’re four type of second order system;

- Underdamped Response
- Critically damped Response
- Overdamped Response
- Undamped Response
Under-damping (ζ < 1)

• In this situation, the system will oscillate at the

natural damped frequency ωn, which is a function of
the natural frequency and the damping ratio.
To find the damping coefficient ratio ξ, (referred text book page 174)
By used this formula ;

Where a =1 , ωn = =
Critical damping (ζ = 1)

• When ζ = 1, there is a double root γ (defined above),

which is real. The system is said to be critically
damped.
• A critically damped system achieves equilibrium
faster than any other, and without oscillating.
To find the damping coefficient ratio ξ, (referred text book page 174)
By used this formula ;

Where a =10 , ωn = =
Over-damping (ζ > 1)

• When ζ > 1, the system is over-damped and there

are two different real roots.
• An over-damped will take longer time to achieve
equilibrium than a critically damped.
To find the damping coefficient ratio ξ, (referred text book page 174)
By used this formula ;

Damping responses in daily life...
Situation : On the red signal traffic light, the
car stop after you apply brakes.

How this situation related to :-

- Overdamped Response
- Underdamped Response
- Critical damped Response
UNDERDAMPED RESPONSE
• On a red signal, if you stop your car beyond
the white limiting line, after you apply brakes.
CRITICAL DAMPED RESPONSE
• On a red signal, if you stop your car exactly on
the white limiting line, after you apply brakes.
OVER DAMPED RESPONSE
• On a red signal, if you stop your car well before
the white limiting line, after you apply brakes .
