This document presents a project on designing, constructing, and testing the performance of a universal PVC pipe testing device. The objectives were to design and build the device to measure the internal pressure of PVC pipes and compare the results to standard values. The design of the testing apparatus is shown along with its components. The construction and testing process are also described. Test results for bursting pressures of different sized PVC pipes are presented in tables and charts. The conclusions are that the device can reliably test PVC pipes and the experimental bursting pressure values were close to theoretical standards.

Introduction: PVC PVC as a pipe material

Charateristics
Project purpose

Objectives: Design for universal PVC pipe testing device.

To construct the device according to the design.


To measure the internal hydrostatic pressure & brusting

pressure of PVC pipe with the device.


To compare the values of maximum internal hydrostatic

pressure with the standard values (BS-3505).

Literature survey:
PVC was accidentally discovered on at least two different

occasions in the 19th century, first in 1835 by Henri Victor Regnaultand and in 1872 by Eugen Baumann. For more than 40 years, both pressure and non-pressure PVC applications have been rigorously tested for reliability and safety by nationally recognized, independent certifiers such as the American Water Works Association, NSF International and Underwriters Laboratories, according to strict standards established by the American Society for Testing and Materials and other organizations.

Project Description:The whole project is divided into three parts Design. Construction & Performance test.

Required Components:The followings are the main equipment needed to make this project successfully:

Metal square plate. Conical shaped arrangement (metal). Guide rod. Hexagonal nut. PVC (polyvinyl chloride) pipe. Pressure gauge. Ball valve. Reservoir . Hydraulic pump. GI Pipe. Metal bar. Gasket. Air bleeding valve.

Conclusion: This system is capable for testing PVC pipe of various diameters.

Pipe can easily be connected or disconnected from device.


The device which is used for testing the PVC pipe, can sustain the

working pressure reasonably well.


Comparatively less skill is needed for testing performance.
The testing device is a simplified one for testing pressure. Our experiment value was less then Theoretical value (bursting

pressure) as for example a class B 4" diameter PVC pipe has a theoretical bursting pressure of 330psi while its practical value was 290 psi which was 12.12% less than the theoretical value.
