Coupling

This document discusses different types of couplings and their applications. It describes flexible (pin bush) couplings which transmit torque and compensate for misalignment. Gear couplings are torsionally rigid and can compensate for various misalignments. Tyre couplings are highly flexible and can accommodate large shaft misalignments through replaceable rubber tyres. Flexible claw couplings are compact, fail-safe universal joints suitable for high speeds and bell housing installation. Fluid couplings transmit power hydrokinetically without mechanical contact, providing overload protection for connected machinery such as pumps, mixers, and ventilators.

COUPLING

TYPES AND APPLICATION

FLEXIBLE(PIN BUSH) COUPLING

FLEXIBLE (PIN AND BUSH) COUPLING

Flexible couplings transmit torque from one shaft to another and are particularly useful in cases where limited misalignment of shaft is unavoidable. flexible coupling is a cushioned drive type, trasmitting the torque through rubber bushes which have excellent capacity to absorb shocks. The flanges are cast iron and are suitable for speeds up to the maximum as mentioned in catalogue.

GEAR COUPLING

GEAR COUPLING
Gear type couplings are torsionally rigid. Due to the special design of their teeth, they compensate for axial, radial and angular misalignments of the connected machinery. Special Features Small outside dimensions, large bores, low weights, low moments of inertia, large permissible misalignments, crowned and barrelled teeth. The assembly is selfcentring and hermetacally sealed through either double-lipped seals or O-rings (smaller sizes only).

TYRE COUPLING

APPLICATION OF GRID COUPLING

Features:highly flexible rubber tyre coupling without circumferential backlash; compensating very large shaft misalignments; the rubber tyre can be easily replaced without the need to move the coupled machines; easy mounting on the shafts with Taper bushes or hubs bored according to customer's requirements; nominal torque range TKN between 24 Nm and 14,500 Nm.

Fields of application
Heavy machinery construction, metallurgical engineering, materials-handling technology, pumps, compressors, etc.

FLEXIBLE CLAW COUPLING

FEATURES
flexible, fail-safe universal coupling; very compact design, high power capacity; very well suitable for plug-in assembly and assembly into bell housing; available ex stock in 13 sizes for a torque range from 13.5 Nm up to 3,700 Nm; type BWT with Taper bush for easy assembly and bore adaptation.

FIELD OF APPLICATION
General mechanical engineering; especially as high-speed coupling on the motor side and for bell housing installation, e.g. in hydraulic drives, geared motors, pump drives, and axle drives.

FLUID COUPLING

FLUID COUPLING
Fluid Coupling operates on the hydrokinetic power transmission principle:power is transmitted by means of a fluid, there being no mechanical contact between the motor and the driven machine. As such, it constitutes a safety feature protecting transmission components from damage due to overload or shock. The fluid coupling permits the use of a squirrel cage induction motor with the attendant advantages of simplicity, ruggedness and low operating costs. Torque transmitted is directly proportional to the amount of fluid in the unit and hence it is very simple, by varying the oilfill, to match the coupling to the exact requirements of the

WORKING OF FLUID COUPLING

When the fluid coupling is filled with oil to the appropriate level and the motor is switched on, oil in the passages between the vanes of the impeller is accelerated radially outwards gaining energy all the time until it reaches the maximum circuit diameter. The oil then passes from the impeller to the runner in which it is forced to move inwards between the vanes and as its radial velocity falls energy is transferred to the runner and output shaft. Because the oil passes directly from the impeller to the runner, (there is no reaction member, as in a torque converter), the efficiency is high, with full load slips of between 2 and 5 % being achieved in practice and depending on the application and size selection. Windage and oil circulation losses are negligible therefore efficiency equals 100% slip %. Should an overload occur the fluid coupling will stall, i.e. slip 100 % at a torque value determined by the initial oil filling level. Thus motor and machine are both protected.

APPLICATION
Hoisting devices, centrifugers, mixers, drum drives, crushers, ventilators, pumps, shredders, bucket wheel excavators, PTO shaft generators, and pulleys.
