Network Types

This document describes different types of computer networks. It discusses Local Area Networks (LANs), which connect nodes within a single room or building, including both wired and wireless configurations. Metropolitan Area Networks (MANs) connect devices within a city or small region. Wide Area Networks (WANs) span greater distances measured in miles to connect distant LANs. The document also covers peer-to-peer, client-server, and centralized vs distributed network models and lists advantages like shared resources and disadvantages like security issues.

Networks

U2M3 Lecture 2 Types of Networks

Objectives
Describe different types of networks Describe different kinds of networks List the advantages and disadvantages of networks

Types and Sizes of Networks

Two of the most basic ways that networks are differentiated and contrasted are:
relative distances between the nodes the mechanisms used to communicate

TYPES
Local Area Network (LAN) Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) Wide Area Network (WAN)

Local Area Network (LAN)

LAN is a network in which the nodes are relatively close to each other
generally, within the same room or building.

Types of LAN wired LAN wireless LAN (WLAN)

Wireless Local Area Networks

WLAN: is a Local area networks that connect nodes without wires,
using radio frequencies or light.

Wireless technologies,
Limits connecting devices within a few hundred feet
IEEE 802.11 is an example of a WLAN standard

Metropolitan Area Networks

This refers to a network that spans a particular small region or a city.
can be considered either as
small WANs that cover a limited geographical area, large LANs that cover an area greater than that normally associated with a local network.

Wireless metropolitan area networks

WMANs; IEEE 802.16 is an example of a WMAN standard.

Wide Area Network

A WAN is a networks that connect together nodes or other networks over a great geographical distances.
measured in miles,

WANs are used to link together physically distant LANs

Kinds of Network
The configuration of the network is determined by how the resources are shared
resource management functions
Equally shared among all devices, certain computer are responsible for providing this service.

TYPES
Peer to Peer Client - Server Centralized vs. Distributed System

Advantages Of A Network
Allows the sharing of resources
disk storage, printers, image scanners, modems and central servers

Allows sharing of information on disk drives

accessible by authorized users

Application programs stored on one computer

available to all users no need to have copies individually installed on each computer
Reduce software license cost Reduce software maintenance

Advantages Of A Network
Improve communication
Allows e-mail to be sent between users

Easier to set up new users and equipment

Users not restricted to one computer

Allows the connection of different types of computer which can communicate with each other

The Main Disadvantages of Networks

Users become dependent on them
the network file server develops a fault, then many users will be unable to run application programs

If the network stops operating then it may not be possible to access various hardware and software resources The efficiency of a network is very dependent on the skill of the system manager
A badly managed network may operate less efficiently than stand-alone machines

The Main Disadvantages of Networks

It is difficult to make the system secure from hackers, novices or industrial espionage
As network traffic increases the performance degrades unless properly designed.
