Purpose Of Improve Phase

Reduces the list of Xs to the critical few Determines the quantified relationship between the Y and Xs Focuses improvement efforts on critical input variables Tests multiple variables at different levels to screen, characterize and optimize process output Tests and validates the optimum operating conditions Determines new (improved) process performance baseline and capability

Questions To Be Answered
Who operates the process? Who is the Process Owner? What daily tasks need to change? How will the Process Owner and operator be impacted by the change? What tests were conducted to evaluate potential solutions? What criteria was used for the tests and evaluations? What changes will need to be made to implement the improvement? How will these changes impact the culture?

2001 ConceptFlow

Questions to Be Answered
Where was the solution validated? How was the solution validated and analyzed? What were the operating conditions during testing? Was the data collection plan statistically valid? When will the proposed solution be communicated to the Process Owner and operator? What is the timeline for implementation and training? What is the cost/benefit analysis?

2001 ConceptFlow

Questions to Be Answered
Why was the potential solution chosen? Has the solution been thoroughly tested and evaluated? Has the process been simulated with the proposed solution? Are there potential red flags with the proposed solution? How were tests conducted? Was the optimum solution simulated? Does the optimum solution reduce the variation and defect impacting the CTQ? Does the solution address the root cause of the process variation?

Improve Phase Deliverables Check List

Black Belt is responsible for delivering the following items at completion of the Improve Phase:
Analyze Deliverables summarized and updated Revised problem statement reflecting an increased understanding of the problem Use and display data to identify and verify the critical factors DOE or regression sampling plan Graphical analysis and interpretation of data for variable relationships Transfer function, Y = f(X) Detailed Process Map of recommended optimum process Alternative solution(s) for optimum process Cost / benefit analysis of proposed solution Validate improvements via capability studies Implementation plan developed and communicated Project management report (Gantt chart, timelines, milestones, critical path) Any red flags with project or implementation of new process and recommendations to resolve Next steps Signed approval of report out by Project Champion

Report out detailed, supported by data and concise
