Microprocessor is the heart, the soul as well

as the brain of computer. In fact it is itself a computer.

Microprocessor is the single chip integrating

all the function of CPU

Central processing unit which co-ordinate all the function of computer. Generates timing signal, sends and receives data to and from every peripheral used inside or outside the computer. The command required to do this are fed into the device in the form of current variation which are converted into meaningful instruction by the use of boolean logic system. It divides the function into two categories, logical function and processing function.

The

ALU and Control unit perform these function respectively. The information is communicated through bunch of wires called BUSES.

SHOCKELY

BRATTAIN and BARDEEN are the man behind the invention of microprocessor in 1947. Function of this large component can be performed easily by arranging group of transistor on a single chip. This is called INTEGRATED CHIP(IC). And the man behind this was JACK KILBY.

INTEL

4004 Introduced in 1971. It was the first microprocessor by Intel. It was a 4-bit p. It had 2,300 transistors. It could execute around 60,000 instructions per second.

8-BIT MICROPROCESSOR
In late 1971 microprocessor enter into the commercial field. Intel launch 8008 microprocessor in late 1971 and in 1973 launches upgraded model of it named as 8080.

Introduced

in 1976. Its data bus is 8-bit and address is 16 bit. It could access 64k memory. It could execute 7,69,230 instructions /sec. It has 6500 transistors.

To work with larger application , evolution of 16 bit p took place.

16 BIT p
Introduced in 1978. Its data bus is 16 bit and address bus is 20 bit. It has 29,000 transistor and can access 2.5

million instruction/sec It could access 1MB of memory Example:- 8086 , 8088 , 80186 , 80286 p.

Introduced in 1986. Its data bus and address bus are of 32 bit. It has 2,75,000 transistors. It could access 4 GB of memory.
