Grammar Based Approaches

The grammar-translation method is a traditional method for teaching second languages that dates back to the 15th century. It focuses on memorizing grammatical rules and vocabulary to translate between the native and target languages. Under this method, the teacher leads the class through memorization and translation exercises from the textbook with little student interaction. While easy for teachers to implement, it does not promote active use of the target language by students.
