EUROPE – A never ending
journey
• One of the world’s seven continents
• Only part of a larger landmass called
EURASIA – Europe and Asia
• Second smallest continent by surface
area, covering 10,180,000 square
kilometers
• Having 50 states, Russia is the
largest by both area and population,
while Vatican City is the smallest

• Europe´s surface area covers more
than 10 million square kilometers,
that is, one fourth of Asia. A territory
for discoveries and pleasures that
will easily meet your expectations!

• Europe has five major geographic areas, each comprising large
European regions:
– Eastern Europe: the Baltic States (Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia),
Ukraine, Romania

– Western Europe: the Iberian Peninsula (Spain and Portugal),


France, the United Kingdom and Ireland, Italy, Switzerland,
Benelux (Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg), Malta,
Cyprus, Monaco

– Central Europe: Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic,


Slovenia, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia

– South-East Europe: Greece, Albania, Bulgaria, Croatia,


Montenegro, Serbia, Turkey

• Europe is a territory of great ethno-
cultural and linguistic heritage:
Nordic, Anglo-Saxon and
Mediterranean cultures live together
in harmony and have given rise to an
extraordinary wealth of peoples,
traditions and lifestyles.

listed 35 official languages, completed by 222
secondary languages. In Western Europe, these secondary or
vernacular languages are often just regional, but some of them
are still taught at school, starting in childhood:
– In France: Breton, Basque, Corsican, Occitan

– In Spain: Basque, Galician, Catalan

– In the United Kingdom: Welsh, Gaelic, Irish

– In Italy: Sardinian

– In Scandinavia: Lappish
Three major religions
prevail in Europe:
• Northern Europe countries are mostly Protestant (United
Kingdom, Scandinavia, the Netherlands, Northern
Germany…)

• Eastern and South-East Europe countries are mainly


Orthodox (Greece, Russia, Ukraine, Romania, Serbia)

• Catholicism is the predominant religion in 23 countries,


including Portugal, Spain, Italy, France, Belgium, Southern
Germany, Poland, Austria, Croatia, Slovenia…

• The Muslim religion is present throughout Europe as a


whole, and is the main religion in three countries: Bosnia-

– discover antiquity and the cradle of our
western civilization: Greek and Roman
remains, which abound throughout

• Central Europe
– Central Europe stretches from the Alps
to the Baltic Sea, which insures that the
landscape is varied and dazzling.
The countries of Central Europe are
Germany, Austria, Hungary, Poland,
the Czech Republic, Slovakia and

for nature lovers.
Several countries´
governments are
finally aware of
their priceless
environmental
heritage. Europe´s
territories are
dotted with
national parks,
regional parks,
nature reserves

• Every city, every region conceals countless
treasures: town centers or entire districts built in
the Middle Ages, churches, cathedrals, castles
and manors, typical or traditional houses, covered
markets, belfries, high walls
• Every country offers a highly-varied festival
programmed for every season. You are bound to
find what you love most: music, opera, theatre…
Art in all its facets is out in the streets, accessible
to locals and visitors alike.
Europe’s Culture
• Europe has a reputation to maintain in the
Art of Living: cuisine and fine wine, but
also beer, are among Europeans´ favorite
topics of conversation and take up a
considerable part of their leisure time.
Every European country, every Pan-
European region, will offer you an
extensive range of typical meals, that can
be enjoyed with marvelous wines. Indulge
yourself in this delight.
Getting around Europe
• Once in Europe, the options are
numerous: airplanes, ferries, trains, buses,
taxis, rental cars and even bicycles are all
great ways to enjoy different aspects of
the European adventure.
– Low-cost carriers are among the most popular ways to
take the edge off pricey intra-European flights and can
sometimes be less expensive than train travel for the
same distance.
– Rail passes feature price incentives, sometimes
including ferry connections which are often linked into
the rail timetable.
– Car rental and Bus Travel s usually the most cost-
efficient way to travel, in terms of money, if not time,

industrialized; the largest industrial areas are
found in W central Europe, England, N Italy, Ukraine, and
European Russia.
• Agriculture, forestry (in N Europe), and fishing (along the
Atlantic coast) are also important.
• Europe has a large variety of minerals; coal, iron ore,
and salt are abundant. Oil and gas are found in E Europe
and beneath the North Sea. Coal is used to produce a
significant, but declining amount of Europe's electricity;
in Norway and Sweden and in the Alps hydroelectric
plants supply a large percentage of the power.
• More than 25% of Europe's electricity is generated from
nuclear power.
