Styles: Popular Music Genres

Britney Spears Toxic represents popular music genres because the video has lots of costume changes, sex appeal, special effects, dancing and a big budget.
The reason for this is because she is on a major record label which will give her and the music video a bigger budget to work with. The genre of the video usually reflects on the genre of the song which creates a good match.

Styles: In-concert and as live footage

Blessthefall The Reign represents inconcert and as live footage because the video shows them playing live performances throughout. Videos that are like this are usually actual concert footage or filmed like it was a real concert and are usually on independent labels. In-concert and as live footage music videos are a good way to show the audience what the artist is like live.

Styles: Animation - stop motion & digital

Gorrilaz Clint Eastwood represents animation because the whole video is digitally animated. The bands music videos are all usually animated throughout.

Animated videos are a good way to produce music videos which are not realistic to film (?)
No matter whether it is stop motion or digital, a video which is partly or wholly animated fall under the heading of animation.

Styles: Interpretative
Rebecca Black Friday represents interpretative videos because she is singing what she is singing and the video shows what she is singing (?)

Usually the videos show the artist being a narrator throughout the video.
There are not videos produced which use this style(?)

Styles: Narrative
R Kelly Trapped in the closet represents the narrative style because the video has a story in which the viewers can follow whilst listening to the song. Narrative videos usually tell a message or a meaning behind the video for the audience to understand. Narrative videos can be very helpful if the artist is trying to promote a message through the video.

Styles: Impressionist
The Fray How to save a life represents impressionist videos because the mix and blending of colours throughout the video and the mixture of soft light and soft edges. Impressionist videos are considered to be more artistic and are more creative than other music videos. Impressionist videos come from the 19th century art movement, impressionism.

Styles: Surrealist
Suicide Silence Wake Up represents surrealist videos because it shows someone who is meant to be on a drug trip so there are lots of colours and could be described as absurd. Surreal images and often weird videos are known to this style. Some surrealist videos are creative although they are very different.

Styles: Pastiche
Queen Bohemian Rhapsody would represent pastiche style because of the costumes within the music video representing a theatrical feel to the video. Pastiche videos are usually light hearted imitation of anothers style. Pastiche videos are a good way to implement different styles into one video

Styles: Parody
The Midnight Beast Down would represent a parody video because they make fun of the original song Down by Jay Sean. Parody videos usually make fun of original songs and adds their own twist to them The reason for parody videos is to make the audience laugh but also to show creativity

Styles: Referencing
Linkin Park New Divide would represent referencing videos because the video has the band playing as well as little clips from the movie Transformers which this song is a soundtrack for the movie Referencing videos sometimes reference other subjects, events or an individual person, however soundtrack videos most likely will have references to the film it is a soundtrack for.

Styles: Homage
Michael Jackson Smooth Criminal would represent the homage style because he stated that his character in the video was based on Fred Astaire which was a character in The Band Wagon (1953).

Homage music videos usually are a way that artists use to show that other media texts have influenced them and their video. This then shows by the way the video is created either by using the same scenes from a film or from basing the video on a character like Michael Jackson did.

Styles: Influence of commercials

Geri Halliwell Bag it up would represent the influence of commercials style because the whole music video is shot like it is an advert for television and they are trying to sell the product Girl Powder. Through allusion and parody advertising has snuck into music videos which then created music videos like the one Geri Halliwell did but also how there is a lot of product placement in music videos now.

Conventions: Lyric interpretation

Lyric interpretation is where the viewer deciphers the words of the song along with the visuals. However, it is also the way in which the director uses the lyrics to his advantage by creating a music video representing some of those lyrics. A good example for lyric interpretation would be Lady Gaga Bad Romance

Conventions: Extending songs meaning

Extending the songs meaning is where we enlarge the meaning of the song by looking at the lyrics and then try to promote the meaning of the song through images and the music video. This is a good way to promote a message throughout the music video but also to show why the song was written in the first place A good example of this would be Escape The Fate Ungrateful. This video promotes that violence is a vicious circle.

Conventions: Consolidating songs meaning

When consolidating the songs meaning we narrow down the meaning and join the images and song in the video together to make the meaning of the song almost right in front of you. This is good for promoting meaning so that the audience can understand it straight away. Michael Jackson Earth Song is a good example because it shows the world being destroyed around him, promoting to stop destroying the planet.

Conventions: Allusion
Allusion is where you reference an existing text, an individual person, a place or an event. Some references can be discreet but others are much open. If the allusion is that discreet the only person who may actually get the reference would be the producer of the video. An example of allusion is Gwen Stefani What You Waiting For.

Conventions: Links to other artists

Sometimes music video may be linked to other artists through references. There are several ways in which this happens but the main two are through parody or homage. Usually when an artist links it to another artist they like that original artists style or song. An example of this would be Alien Ant Farm Smooth Criminal

Techniques: Cutting to a beat

Cutting to a beat technique is where you match up the shots you have to the beat of the song, this can be used to show rhythm in the music video but also creativity.
Cutting to a beat is a good technique to use however it is not common in music videos yes, it really is!! The White Stripes The Hardest Button to Button would be a good example to show of cutting to a beat.

Techniques: Effects
Aesthetically pleasing visual effects are used for many reasons, one of which is to make the video look completely different to bring in more of an audience. However you may attract a different audience with the effects you use. The effects in which are used in videos usually suit the genre the music is. Bring Me The Horizon Shadow Moses is a good example for a video using effects.

Techniques: Miming and lip sync

If the artist has a live performance video it would require the artist to mime the lyrics so that it gives the impression that they are actually singing the song live.
They may need to film it multiple times to get different angles but also in case the artist messes up. An example of miming and lip syncing would be Asking Alexandria - Breathless

Techniques: Playback and lip sync

Playback and lip sync is where the artist lip syncs within the studio with separate audio and visuals, the speed can be changed for various effects such as slow motion around the artist even though they are lip syncing in time with the song. This is a good technique to use when you want effects like having slow motion footage but the normal speed song. An example of this technique would be Wish I Was A Punk Rocker Sandi Thom

Techniques: Multi-image
Multi-image is where many images are shown on the screen at the same time, some images can be changed fast and frequent to create, in a sense, a panorama. However split screen is not multi image but it is the more modern and more efficient way of creating multiple images on the screen at once. An example of this would be Blink182 - Always

Techniques: Camera Movements

Camera movements is where pans, tilts, tracking shots and crab shots are used to show movement within the video which can create good effects and also a good flow for the music video. Also having these camera movements can create an excitement to the music video. An example of camera movements would be Beyonce & Jay-Z Bonnie and Clyde

Techniques: Camera angles and shot types

Using various shot angles and also the length of the shot, the director could create hidden meaning or tone within a music video. Shot variation also comes into play with these two. An example of a music video which has different angles and shot types would be The Fugees Ready or not

Techniques: Chroma key

Chroma key is where the footage is shot in front of a green or blue screen and then the unwanted block colour behind is removed from the shot which then can be switched with another image or video. Chroma keying is really useful when using green or blue screens because it keeps the part you want clear and does not have rough edges. An example of chroma key would be Bring Me The Horizon It Never Ends.

Zac,
Well done for covering all the terms. I am really disappointed however, that you have copied so much; not only are the majority of examples copied, but a substantial amount of the text is too. You need to make these changes before I give you a grade I will not grade plagiarised work.
