Contour by GIS - Google

The document describes the process of creating a contour map from Google Earth and ArcGIS in 7 steps: 1. Open Google Earth and specify a location and topography layer. 2. Open ArcMAP and import terrain points from Google Earth specifying a save location. 3. A window displays to specify contour intervals to import points from Google. 4. The imported image can reference point locations. 5. Transform the coordinates to UTM WGS84 and project to perform contouring. 6. Create a TIN surface in ArcMAP from the feature class to use for contours. 7. Use the Contour tool to generate contours from the TIN surface at the specified interval

Contour in Google and ArcGIS

The two programs (Google and ArcGIS) should be opened

From ArcGIS, import screen

Then the program will import the image from google with the same coordinates )image will be Black & White

Save the image with a name

Construct a contour map from google earth and ArcGIS

1- open google earth 2- specify the required location on the screen 3- select a topography layer from the layers and adjust the coordinates by selecting the the geographic coordinates (dd-mm-s) and units by meter from the tool menu and then options as follows:

4- open ArcMAP from KML, select get point from terrain asfollows

5- A window to specify the location to save points from terrain as follows:

6- A window is displayed to specify the contour intervals to start import points from google as:

7- then the image can be imported to be reference to know the points location on screen
The following image shows the shape file (points) and a table includes their coordinates x, y, z The coordinates is in decimal degrees It should be converted into UTMWGS84

8- close the current file and open a data file and the open arc tool box, then open data management tools and then projection & transformation, then project A window will displayed to specify the file to be transformed in the first column The new file will displayed In the third column, specify the coordinates by which the contour map could be performed The following images show the above steps:

The shape file will be displayed

Then compute the new coordinates x, y

The result is a table includes the complete coordinates x, y, z

Then the contour map and 3 D ground can be produced as follows

With arcMAP starting with forming a TIN (Triangle Irregular Network) From 3D-analysis tool bar, select 3D analysis and then select create/modify TIN And then create TIN from features

The following window will displayed Specify in the layer the file that will be used in making 3D surface

And then specify in the field of height source Z

Anf save the new file

Then , TIN 3D surface will done to be used in contours production

To draw contoures, select surface analysis and then contours from the tool box 3D analyst

A window will displayed (see the figure) Then specify in input surface field the file to be used in contours production Then specify the required interval between contoures in the field contour interval Then save the new file

The following is the result file (contours with contour interval 10 m)

The lowest contour is 40 m The highest contour is 780 m
