What is H.E.V.
Hybrid-electric vehicles (HEVs) combine the benefits of gasoline engines and electric motors and can be configured to obtain different objectives improved fuel economy increased power minimum emissions
Types of H.E.Vs
Starting
When the vehicle is started the engine warms up, If necessary the electric motor acts as generator, converting energy from engine to electricity and battery gets charged in this period.
Regenerative Braking
Modern HEVs make use of efficiency-improving technologies such as regenerative braking, which converts the vehicle's kinetic energy into electric energy to charge the battery, rather than wasting it as heat energy as conventional brakes do.
During heavy accelerating or when additional power is needed, the gasoline engine and electric motor both are used to drive the wheels
(3) To avoid inefficient operation, the ICE turns off, if the power required is below minimum limit, and the electric motor delivers the required power.
(4) Motor charges the battery during regenerative braking events.
(5) When battery SOC is lower than the set minimum value, the ICE produces extra power, to sustain battery SOC.
when current SOC > cs_lo_soc. In this situation, battery delivers power to keep ICE operation in an efficient region. To avoid inefficient operation, ICE should turn off when: a) vehicle speed < cs_elec_launch_speed and b) add_trq + cs_charge_trq < ICE off torque.

when current SOC < cs_lo_soc, if the requested torque is at the operation point A, engine will work at point B, since it must provide the additional power to charge the battery. Nevertheless, if the requested torque is at point C, and this torque plus the additional charge torque is below the Minimum Torque Envelope, the engine will work at point E instead of D

PSO
PSO
In general, the process of particle swarm optimization of a parallel HEV transit bus can be stated as follows: 1) Initialize positions and associated velocities of all particles of the swarm in the population of D-dimensional search space. The particle position is represented as variable X in equation (6), with its respective lower and upper bounds. 2) Evaluate the objective and constraint functions of each particle of the swarm by integrating the PSO algorithm and the ADVISOR software. 3) Evaluate the fitness values of all particles according to equation(5) and determine the individual best and global best positions of the current generation.
4) Update new velocities and positions of each particle using (1) and (4), respectively.
5) Terminate the algorithm, if the convergence criterion are matched, or go to step 2,
and output the global best with the minimum fitness value in the last generation. Convergence will occur, if the fitness value of the global best does not change for N generations.
PSO
Energy Sources
NO need of large bulky ICE, small efficient engines can be used. As No requirement of such high power, other sources of fuels for ICE can also be used. Electric Sources Batteries Fuel Cells
Challenges of H.E.V
Desired battery sizing and life cycle has to be achieved. Setup of vehicle charging and refueling should be made across the country.
