Traffic Simulation

This document discusses a study of traffic signal optimization on Rajiv Gandhi Salai (Old Mahabalipuram road), also known as the IT Corridor in Chennai. The study aims to optimize signal timings using the TRANSYT software tool to reduce traffic congestion along the corridor. Data was collected on traffic volumes, composition and existing signal timings at 4 intersections along a 1 km stretch of the road. Optimization of signal timings using TRANSYT found reductions in total travel time, delays and improved mobility. Recommendations include periodically recalibrating signal timings to cope with changing traffic volumes and maintaining an automatic traffic database.

NEED FOR THE STUDY Rajiv Gandhi Salai (Old Mahabalipuram road) also known as IT Corridor is one of the most important roads in Chennai This road has considered for study since heavy traffic congestion on both the directions of the road Reason for traffic congestion in this road are uncontrolled traffic flow due to IT and other major industries are located along the corridor Improper signal timing signals are operated manually some of the signals are not functioning No coordination between the signals

Fig shows Traffic Congestion in the Project Corridor

Traffic congestion causes Increase in the total travel time It causes environmental degradation through air and sound pollution. reduction in the speed, Increases the accident potential, and Cost ineffectiveness of the transportation system To overcome the above problem Traffic signal optimization is typically needed to process traffic efficiently through a group of intersections. It attempts to reduce the number of stops and regulate the traffic, It reduces accident potential Need for signal optimization may be justified by high levels of vehicle emissions and poor air quality.

OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY To study the present traffic flow characteristics and physical

features of the study network.

To determine the optimal signal timings by considering prevailing traffic flow for the corridor

To improve the traffic flow using a traffic signal optimization tool

TRANSYT.

LITERATURE REVIEW Yun and Brain Park published a report in Stochastic Optimization Method for Coordinated Actuated Signal Systems on Dec 2005 Traffic Engineering Division Colorado Springs published a report in Traffic Signal Coordination Planning Effort on April 2005 R.Kaviarasu presented the paper in feasibility of introducing traffic signal coordination on Indian Roads OBSERVATION FROM REVIEW OF LITERATURE These studies show that, Indian roads comprise of mixed traffic which influences the effectiveness of signal coordination in urban areas. From the past studies it is observed that the improper signal timing was the reason for traffic issues Optimization & Coordination of traffic signals resulted in improved travel time, reduced accidents, improved mobility and access.

LITERATURE REVIEW Stochastic optimization method may be sensitive to the parameter

settings for optimization and the number of signal timings to be

optimized. A significant demerit of the stochastic optimization method is huge

computational requirement.
TRANSYT could be used for evaluation of optimized traffic signal timings.

METHODOLOGY CHART

METHODOLOGY 1. Collection of primary and secondary data for existing conditions of the study area. The data to be collected are Physical feature of the study network Traffic volume count study at each intersection. Pedestrian volume count. Existing Traffic Signal Phasing pattern and timings at each intersection. 2. Optimize the signal timings for the existing flow conditions using Traffic Signal Optimization tool TRANSYT. 3. To suggest and recommend new traffic management measures for traffic flow.

STUDY AREA Rajiv Gandhi Salai (Old Mahabalipuram road) also known as IT Corridor connecting Adyar at the Northern end and Mahabalipuram at the Southern end. It is a six lane divided road carriageway and also consists of service lanes at either side from Madhya Kailash upto Taramani The study network is selected from Tidel Park intersection to Taramani road intersection. It consists of four junctions namely Tidel park intersection, Ascendas intersection, LB Road intersections and Taramani road intersection. The reason for choosing this stretch is that it has been signalized and the intersections are located within 800 meters which is the prerequisite for effective traffic signal optimization

OPTIMIZATION OF SIGNALS
Optimization is done using Traffic optimization tool TRANSYT In TRANSYT common data such as network cycle time, simulation time etc are to be given as input

OPTIMIZATION OF SIGNALS
Optimization starts with the Assigning of Node numbers for all the intersections

OPTIMIZATION OF SIGNALS
Link numbers are assigned based on the movement of traffic along the nodes

OPTIMIZATION OF SIGNALS
The program will run for offset optimization and green & offset optimization and the corresponding signal timings obtained for both the optimization techniques.

FINDINGS AND RECOMMENDATION

Findings from Field Observation The total length of the study stretch is around 1000m The distance between intersections varies between 200m and 500m There are four no of signal are in study stretch. Tidal Park signal and Tharamani road signals are operated manually and Ascendas signal was not working and LB road intersection was not provided with the signal. Maximum signal timing of 64 sec operated in Tidal Park intersection from Madhya Kailash arm towards Perungudi. Maximum traffic is handled by the Tidal Park Intersection with 10117 PCUs. The Highest turning traffic is at Tidal Park Intersection with 48% from Perungudi arm towards Thiruvanmiyur. The two-wheeler traffic is around 45 to 50% of the total vehicles at all the intersections. Car traffic is around 33% at all the intersections. Auto and bus traffic constitutes around 10% and 3% respectively at all the intersections. Jay walking of Pedestrians in the Tidal Park intersection is around 600 nos though the foot over bridge is available near the intersection.

FINDINGS AND RECOMMENDATION

Findings from Optimization by TRANSYT

Total Distance Travelled in Initial Settings is 7156.5 PCU-KM/H Total Time Spent in Initial Settings is 4036.4 PCU-H/H Time Reduced in Offset Optimization is 3656.0 PCU-H/H Uniform Delay reduces from 436.1 PCU-H/H to 374.3 PCU-H/H

FINDINGS AND RECOMMENDATION

Recommendation The capacity of signalized intersections can be optimized by periodically recalibrating the signal cycle times to cope with the traffic volumes.

A traffic database may be maintained by capturing information on the traffic along

the corridor by installing automatic traffic recorders. Tidal Park Intersection has the total traffic flow of 10117 PCU which is greater than 10000 PCU. As per IRC 92-1985 an interchange should be provided for more than 10000 PCU in a junction. However providing interchange may not be possible since Bukigam Canal flows along the corridor on left side, hence Tunnel way may be provided for through traffic

from Tidal Park Intersection to Tharamani Intersection.

This may adversely reduce the traffic congestion in the study area. Demarcating of stretches of roads exclusively for movement by pedestrians and cyclists and providing safe passage of pedestrian / cyclists by sub-ways.

FINDINGS AND RECOMMENDATION

Recommendation Providing ducts for services and utilities will reduce traffic congestion during maintenance

Organize campaigns and special drives to educate the road users to adhere to traffic
discipline Enforcement of laws & regulations with respect to traffic movement and violation at signals.
