Setting: College students in Taiwan(applied foreign English) Age: Young adults 18+ Level: Students have been learning English for 7 years. They have high computer skills (Word,PowerPoint, WWW, search, website) The size of the class: 40 students The time of the class: 2 hours a week

Description of the class

This lesson plan integrate the language and technology. Students are being able to approach both skills. They need to cooperate with their groups, discuss and share their ideas, skim and scan the information they need, and create their groups final projects.

Lesson plan -(review time)Day 1


Pre-computer activities: Explains the class objectives for the students. How to achieve the final projects? How teacher evaluates their final projects?(Individual/Group)

Final Project

They need create a website for their groups. They need to categorize their favorite news and revise them with their members in the group. Each of member has different topics but they need to covered all of them into their category. They need to present their final project.

Lesson plan-(review time)Day 1


Procedure: Pre-computer activitiesuse search engine such as Google, Yahoo. Scan and skim ability: Ask student go to another news websites such as ABC. The China Post. They need to observe the websites and answer the questions the teacher gives.

Lesson PlanProcedures: After they discuss with the partners, they need to type the answers in the word documents. Use e-mail ability: They need to send the e-mail to the teacher.

Question-peer work
What do you observe in the websites? How many categories do they have? Could you list the different between CNN news and The China Post news websites? -surface -content -others

Lesson Plan-Day2
Procedure (continued): Recall prior knowledge- listening and vocabulary building Go to a news website- CNN Learning Resources. The teacher leads the students to scan this website and tells them how to use this source for learning English. Students choose one news, listen to the news,do the quizzes, grammar, vocabulary practice. They need to understand every detail in this news and present their news in the end of the class.

Lesson Plan-create on-line newspaper Day 3.

Procedure: Practice1. Students need to work in the groups. They discuss how to achieve their final projects-create their website. 2. Work individual or in groups to review the news on line.

3. Groups consider possible way to design their websites. 4. Groups begin to find their news and design their websites. For example, students copy the pictures and revise the news. They exchange their revise news through e-mail.

5. Students discuss with their partners about their news. All members participate in the discussion, give each member opinion about the news, and make sure each member knowing others news. They start to do their website. 6. Teacher evaluation time.

7. The class and the teacher criticize groups presentations and their websites. 8. Teacher reviews the process and encourages students to continue learning news on the websites. 8. Teacher evaluation time.

Follow up activities:

Join BBC world services on-line communication group. Go to their discussion boards and join them. Next class students can share their experiences in the class.

Closing
Potential problems Students feel the project is too difficult for them because they need to do everything in English. SolutionTeacher needs to let students feel safety when they make mistakes. Do not push students too much. Learning is fun, interesting, and effective.

Closing

Students do not participate in group SolutionTeacher needs to divide two ways to evaluate students, individual and group. Make grades clearly is to help students to know about their responsibilities in this class, otherwise, they will rely on their partners.
