Pre - Calculus: A Simplified Approach

This document provides an overview of linear functions and equations. It defines linear equations as algebraic equations where each term is of the first degree. Key characteristics of linear functions are discussed, including that their graphs are straight lines that can be defined by two points. Methods for determining the x-intercept and y-intercept of a linear function are presented. Several examples of finding intercepts and graphing linear functions are provided. The concept of slope as the ratio of rise over run is defined. Different forms for writing the equation of a line, such as slope-intercept and standard form, are outlined along with examples of writing equations of lines in these forms.

Linear Functions and Equations

Linear Equation
Definition: Linear equation is an algebraic equation in which each term is in the first degree.

Characteristics of a Linear Function

- The graph of linear function or relation consists of the set of all points whose coordinates in ordered pairs (x, y) belong to the function or relation. - One of the forms of linear function is of the form y = mx + b where m and b are both constants. - The graph of a linear function is a straight line. The 2 points are required to graph a straight line. These two points are x and y intercepts that connect the straight line.

How to Determine the Intercepts?

Definition 1: x intercept is a point on x-axis where y = 0. Definition 2: y intercept is a point on y-axis where x = 0.
To determine the x intercept let y = 0 on the linear equation. Then solve for x. To determine the y intercept let x = 0 on the linear equation. Then solve for y.

Examples
I. Find the x and y intercepts and graph the following functions: 1. y = 2x + 4. 2. 3. y = x + 3 4.

The Slope of a Straight Line

What is Slope?
Definition: The slope is defined as the ratio of the change in the value of y (rise) to the change in the value of x ( run) between two points on the line. Special Case: *If the line is parallel to x, the slope is zero. *If the line is parallel to y, the slope is zero.

Forms of the Equation of a Line

*Standard form of the equation of a line. ax + by + c = 0 * Point-slope form - the form where a line is passing through one point with slope. * Slope-intercept form - the form where the slope (m) and y-intercept (b) were given. *Two-point form - the form where the line is passing through two given points. *Intercept form - the form where the x-intercept (a) and y-intercept (b) were given.

Examples
A. Solve the following: 1. Find the slope and y-intercept of 4x 3y 5 = 0. 2. Write the equation of the line in point slope form which passes through (2, 5) and with slope -3. 3. Write the equation of the line with slope -4/5 and y-intercept 3.

Examples
B. Find the equation of the line in standard form: 1. That passes through (5, 4) and with slope -3. 2. Whose slope is -3/5 and y-intercept is -4. 3. Which is parallel to the x-axis and passes through (6, -2).

Examples
4. That is perpendicular to the y-axis and passes through (0, -5). 5. Which passes through (4, 3) and perpendicular to x-y = 5. C. Write the equation of the line in general form: 1. Through the points (2, 1) and (-3, 2)

Examples
2. Through (2, 0) and is perpendicular to the line passing through (4, -2) and (-1, 4). 3. That goes through (5, -1) and is parallel to the line passing through (3, 2) and (-5, 4).
