Lecture 1
The first and most widely used drafting software in the world CAD: Computer-Aided Design CADD: Computer-Aided Design and Drafting CAM: Computer-Aided Manufacturing
Draw toolbar: Modify toolbar: Model, Layout1, Layout2: allow to switch among drawing and different layout for printing Command prompt area: basic ways of working in AutoCAD is by typing commands Status bar: display coordinates and eight mode indicators (Snap, Grid, Ortho, Polar, Osnap, Otrack, LWT, Model)
The Mouse
Left button of the mouse is called the pickbutton, and used for point selection, object selection, menu selection etc. Right button is an alternative to Enter key, also calls up the shortcut menus like other windows program The small cross in the display area is called cross-hair and tells the location of the pointing device Small box at the cross-hair is called pickbox and used to select objects for editing
Toolbars
It gives one-click access to command Twenty-four toolbars can be opened from Toolbar dialog box Standard, Object Properties, Draw, Modify toolbars open by default
Pull-Down Menus
Same as any other windows program
Command Line
Type commands and then press Enter Esc (escape) key is used to cancel a command and also to bring back the command prompt Most of the common commands have one or two letter abbreviations
Arc Circle Erase Line Move Redraw Zoom A C E L M R Z Distance Fillet Layer Linetype Rotate Insert DI F LA LT RO I
Coordinate display
Keeps track of coordinates as the pointer moves (x is horizontal, y is vertical, z is 0) Controlled by the F6 key or by clicking on the display itself Press F6 and see what happens Move cross-hair to a point and press the left button of the mouse Move cross-hair to another point, it opens object selection box, look at the command area
Specify opposite corner:
Pick a second point. This will complete the object selection Turn off by pressing F6
Grid
Press the key F7 or click on the word GRID on status bar
It will turn on grids, the GRID button is down
At the command, type Z and press Enter (zooming), type A for ALL To modify Grid and Snap settings:
Right click on Grid tab Select settings Enter new Grid settings in Grid X spacing Enter new Snap settings in Snap X spacing Hit OK
The full scale drawing space is called model space, MODEL button is down No need to scale the drawing while you are working on it The actual size of drawing printed out on paper can be handled in paper space In paper space you will see the word PAPER instead of MODEL
Snap
Press the key F9 or click the word SNAP, the SNAP button is down Move the cross-hair, it jumps from one grid point to another Turn off Snap by pressing F9 or clicking SNAP button
Ortho:
controlled by F8 key or ORTHO button on status bar It forces the pointing device to pick up points only along horizontal and vertical quadrant lines Can only select points at 0, 90, 180, 270 degrees of rotation from the starting point
Polar:
Controlled by F10 key or POLAR button Tracks points in polar coordinate

To get the Command Line back
Type Control 9
Drawing Lines
Be sure that SNAP, GRID and MODEL are in on (down) position Type L and Enter OR select Line icon from Draw Toolbar OR select menu/Draw/Line. Command line will show
Specify first point:
Pick a point and press the pickbutton. Command line will show
Specify next point or [Undo]:
Pick the second point and press pickbutton. Press the space bar or Enter to end the LINE command
Press Enter or Space bar Press Enter or space bar again to exit the LINE command
Undo command
To undo the line you just drew, type U and Enter OR select Undo tool from standard toolbar Select Redo tool from standard toolbar OR type REDO and Enter to reverse the undo command Redo only works immediately after Undo command
Erasing
Move the cross-hair over the line you want to erase Press pickbutton, the pickbox appears Type e and hit space bar Press pickbutton, the selected line become dotted Hit the space bar, selected line will disappear
The keys
Enter: executes the command Esc: cancels and brings back the command Space bar: substitute for the Enter key F6: controls coordinate display F7: controls GRID F8: controls ORTHO F9: controls SNAP F10: controls POLAR
Printing a drawing
Select Plot from menu/File, OR select Plot tool from standard toolbar It will open the Plot Dialog Box On the Plot Settings tab select paper size, paper units, Drawing Orientation, Plot Area, Plot Scale and Plot option Click on Window< button, AutoCAD will ask to Specify window for printing:, select one corner. It will ask for the opposite corner. As soon as you select the opposite corner the Plot Dialog box will appear and you are ready to plot.
Try the line command, the rectangle command and the circle command to resemble the shapes below:
Type Text in the command line, or Select A from Draw toolbox specify the start point close to the rectangle, specify a height of 1.0, and specify 0 angle of rotation. Type the word House and press enter. Similarly, specify Trees close to the circles.
