Maintenance and Facilities Management: Post Occupancy Evaluation
Dr Sr Md Yusof Hamid Building Surveying Department UiTM Perak
Introduction
Preiser et.al (1988) define Post Occupancy Evaluation (POE) as : "the process of evaluating buildings in a systematic and rigorous manner after they have been built and occupied for some time POE provides feedback of how successful the workplace is in supporting the occupying organisation and individual end-user requirements
Post Occupancy Evaluation
POE usually involves feedback from the building occupants, through questionnaires, interviews and workshops, but may also involve more objective measures such as environmental monitoring, space measurement and cost analysis. How do you feel when you live in this building? It is comfortable or is there any inconvenience thing to highlight?
Post Occupancy Evaluation
POE is a way of providing feedback throughout a buildings lifecycle from initial concept through to occupation. The information from feedback can be used for informing future projects, whether it is on the process of delivery or technical performance of the building Good feedback is an intrinsic part of good briefing and design of buildings.
Benefits of POE
Usability Concept :
Usability = user experience closer to the user user perceptions of the ease and efficiency it is not POE; is a continuing process it is not a project; is a time, place, context and situation bound concept; (Alexander ,2006)
Usability =positive successful design experience is product/service/ facilities - useful, compelling, attractive, easy to use - satisfying
( Elizabeth Rosenzweig ,2010)
Building Usability = buildings that are usable, accessible, enhance - user
experience.
describe -features will be used easily and efficiently during task completion. (Monica Jens,2008)
Usability ..determined by 3 key factors
Usability understanding the user experience of facilities
effectiveness whether users can achieve what they
want to do with the product
efficiency
how long their feelings and attitude towards the product it takes them to achieve it
satisfaction perception of the actual service received as compared to the service they expected (value of expectation).
