How to use static IP with BSNL Broadband connection

The BSNL broadband works on PPPoE authentication and the IP address, Gateway & DNS is allocated and assigned from BRAS server. If you subscribe the static IP address, the allocated IP is associated with login name and therefore every time you log in to broadband, same IP will get assigned to your modem (CPE). The ADSL CPE (modem) supplied by BSNL is a full-fledged router and it can be configured in various modes. For BSNL service, you can configure it in two ways as given below. 1. Bridge Mode: This is the default factory setting. In this mode the modem works as transparent Ethernet bridge and therefore you need to run the PPPoE client software ( for login authentication) on your PC/server. BSNL does not supply this client software and you need to buy it from market. Some freeware like RASPPPoE, Enternet etc. are also available on the Internet. 2. PPPoE Router mode: In this mode the modem works as router and the PPPoE session terminates on WAN port of router. The PPPoE client is in built in the modem and allocated by BRAS server gets assigned to WAN port of modem. The Internal network has to use the private IP and for Internet access NATing happens in modem. BSNL follows this method. This method is advantageous in many ways like availability of advanced features of router and powerful diagnostic tool for troubleshooting the connection problem. (The modem can be configured through simple web based menu. Refer the user manual for details)

Application Scenario using static IP:

1. CPE in PPPoE Router mode:

Static Public IP 59.92.XX.XX

Gateway Server (PPPoE software) Intranet (LAN) Run the applications requiring public IP on this server)

Works as Transparent bridge (Factory default setting)

2. CPE in PPPoE router mode:

192.168.1.1

Web server 192.168.1.100 (80) SMTP server 192.168.1.102 (25) Other machines LAN (Intranet)

Huawei ADSL CPE ASDL line (WAN) port Static Public IP: 59.92.X.X NAT / Firewall/ Filter etc. Virtual server: Redirect all the http (port 80) requests to 192.168.1.100 Redirect all the SMTP (port 25) requests to 192.168.1.102 (Refer document CD to configure virtual server)

It is recommended to use the CPE in PPPoE router mode. This makes internal network secured as the servers are not directly exposed on public IP. The CPE has got all the advanced features like firewall, IP access lists, VPN pass through, NAT, Virtual server which are required for any Intranet.
