1.1 Introduction to the study

This organisation study about the Paul $ company furniture industry is a preliminary study of the supply and use of furniture product. The aim of this study was to assist furniture manufacturers to understand and react to the needs of the rapidly changing furniture industry. Furniture manufacturing has experienced serious setbacks in recent years. Organization Studies as a Science for Design: Creating Collaborative Artifacts and Research it involves deep study of the working of an organisation Organizational studies, sometimes known as organizational science, encompass the systematic study and careful application of knowledge about how people act within organizations. An organizational study sometimes is considered a sister field for, or overarching designation that includes the following disciplines: industrial and organizational psychology, organizational behavior, human resources, and management. However, there is no universally accepted classification system for such subfields. Organizational studies encompass the study of organizations from multiple viewpoints, methods, and levels of analysis. For instance, one textbook divides these multiple viewpoints into three perspectives: modern, symbolic, and postmodern. Another traditional distinction, present especially in American academia, is between the study of "micro" organizational behavior which refers to individual and dynamics in an organizational setting and "macro" strategic management and organizational theory which studies whole organizations and industries, how they adapt, and the strategies, structures and contingencies that guide them. To this distinction, some scholars have added an interest in "meso" scale structures - power, culture, and the networks of individuals and units in organizations and "field" level analysis which study how whole populations of organizations interact. Whenever people interact in organizations, many factors come into play. Modern organizational studies attempt to understand and model these factors. Like all modernist social sciences, organizational studies seek to control, predict, and explain. There is some controversy over the ethics of controlling workers' behavior, as well as the manner in which workers are treated (see Taylor's scientific management approach compared to the human relations movement of the 1940s). As such, organizational behavior or OB (and its cousin, Industrial psychology) have at times been accused of being the scientific tool of the powerful. Those accusations notwithstanding, OB can play a major role in organizational development, enhancing organizational performance, as well as individual and group performance/satisfaction/commitment. One of the main goals of organizational theorists is, according to Simms (1994) "to revitalize organizational theory and develop a better conceptualization of organizational life." An

organizational theorist should carefully consider levels assumptions being made in theory, and is concerned to help managers and administrators.

How organisation is created and maintained. Organisation structure provides the pattern of communication and coordination. The organisation structure helps a member to know what his role is how it relates to other roles. It helps to know why some are assigned bosses and others to work under his guidance.

World Furniture Industry

Furniture industry has changed over the years. It no longer restricts itself to a production of a chair or a table or a bed but today it includes manufacturing of a range of furniture and home furnishings and designed interiors which spell class and elegance. There is a boom time for furniture industry. Every country sports a string of furniture showrooms of all kinds and sizes. Changing lifestyle, disposable incomes, economy growth, increasing migration to urban areas have all contributed to the demand for furniture and in turn the growth of the furniture industry as whole. Furniture industry comprises not only the production of a wide range of products related to office, living room, bedroom, kitchen , garden, school furniture but also mattresses, furnishings, upholstery, parts of furniture etc. A wide variety of raw materials are used in production of furniture like wood, rattan, plastic and metal and more recently silver. Including various varieties of wood, wooden furniture is the major production and exports of the furniture industry in almost every country. Characteristics of the furniture industry

Furniture manufacturing worldwide forms a regionally centralized competition pattern under the clustering effect. The furniture industry is both a organized and a non-organized sector. Utilization of skilled and unskilled workers. Utilization of handcrafted tools, machines and CAD/CAM for manufacturing and designing. Source of employment for rural workers. Employment is spread across many sectors showing the diverse nature of the industry and a broad product range. Consumer expectations and purchasing behaviors have marked regional variations.

Industry Trends
As the world economy is developing fast in the past 10 years, the furniture markets have opened up more and the world furniture industry has been growing fast. Traditional furniture making countries continue to firmly take up over 70% of the global market. This is possible because of their long established production capacity, advancement in science and technology, solid funds and rich management experiences. Meanwhile, developing countries and regions like China, Southeast Asia, Poland and Mexico, with China taking the lead, have built upon their respective competitive advantages and gradually have covered almost 30% of the world market. The furniture industry in such countries is developing strongly and showing great potentials. The European Union furniture industry accounts for about half of the world's furniture production. The production value of this industry in this region is around 82 billion. Considered to be a labor-intensive industry it provides employment for around 1 million people. Among the European countries, Germany takes the lead as the largest furniture producing country, accounting for about 27% of total EU production. This is followed by Italy (21.6%), France (13.5%) and the UK(10.4%). The Canadian Furniture Industry is the 5th largest exporter of furniture in the world. The major furniture producing countries in South East Asia are Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Korea, Taiwan and India. In the context of global furniture trade, Asia shows healthy signs of growth with respect to its other international competitors. Asian furniture has always been popular in developed countries like USA, Europe and Australia. Over 20 years of fast growth, China has been able to bring unlimited business opportunities and vitality to the global furniture industry. Now, China has today emerged as a furniture production center, a circulation center as well as an exhibition center in the world. The rise of China's furniture industry has brought about a new round of restructuring of the global furniture industry and trade pattern. According to a recent estimate, the Indian furniture industry is estimated at around Rs 350 billion. Eighty-five per cent of this falls into the unorganized sector. According to a study by the World Bank, the organized furniture industry is expected to grow by 20 per cent a year and India, Brazil and Russia will witness a boom. But there is considerable knowledge of the pieces made by craftsmen in China, India, Egypt, Mesopotamia, Greece, and Rome from pictorial representations. Beds, tables, chairs, boxes, stools, chests, and other pieces were nearly always made of natural wood, though veneering was known in Egypt, where it was used to produce coffin cases of great durability. The Romans too used veneers, though chiefly for decorative purposes.

Furniture in India
Engraved ebony-wood India furniture was known in South India during the 19th century. Later rosewood became popular also in that region. Walnut India furniture was famous in North India. Kashmir, she sham furniture was known in the plains. Traditional wooden carvers still use simple tools following the Furniture India styles which have been passed on from generations.

Examples of India Furniture Furniture India has traditionally been limited to a small number of pieces: Bajot is a low table found throughout India which is used for displaying the family's favorite objects. Patara is a formal chest popular in western and central India. The piece can be made of leather or metal. It is used to hold the family's prized possession such as a bride's dowry. Chowkie is a low stool with a carved backrest. These stools are used in various ways serving as seats in courtyards or in farms as India farmers make butter.

Types of Furniture India

Cane Furniture The production of Cane Furniture is part of India's history, region and culture. The skill required to make a piece of Cane Furniture is more pronounced in the Cachar district of India. The manufacturing of Cane Furniture involves preparing bamboo slips. Pieces of slips are joined together often times with nails. For round cane furniture, iron rods are used to bend the round bamboo cane. Wooden Furniture India had the highest demand for wood in South Asia but the supply is rare due to exploitation of the forests in the region for centuries. A high proportion of the Wooden Furniture segment of the Furniture Indian industry is imported from other countries. Even raw materials for the local furniture production are often imported from countries such as New Zealand, France, Italy, Malaysia, Indonesia and Myanmar. Although Wooden Handicraft Furniture is exported out of India, the quantity is small. Most of these local artisans are unorganized and are not involved in international trade.

Furniture India Imports

Import of Furniture India received a boost in 1998 when importers no longer required a license or special permission to import to India. By 2000, the India government allowed foreigners to invest 100% in local furniture manufacturing. This policy enticed companies such as Sauder and Herman Miller (US), List a (Switzerland), and Gautier (France) to enter the India market. Eighty five percent of the India Furniture industry is part of the unorganized sector with businesses that are often family owned and personally financed. More recently, larger organizations funded by bank loans are gaining entry into the India market. While some companies sell their furniture through distributors, most of them sell direct to consumers.

Furniture India Imports Opportunity

The demand for branded furniture has increased in India due to the emerging upper and middle class urban population. Although demand for local artisan furniture still exists, the growth is in imports as Indians seek contemporary designs in a modern world. The reduction in import tariffs has also driven the growth of imported furniture. All these factors provide a very favorable environment for those importers interested in importing furniture to India.

History of Furniture India

Historically, Furniture India did not have much of an influence on India's interior design. Indians tend to sit on the floor on cushions and sleep on pads. The Muslims began to influence Furniture India around 1,000 A.D. as beds, chests and tables were introduced to the India interiors. Wood tended to befo poor quality as a material for furniture. Ivory, stone and metals were used instead. Carpets, rugs and textiles were still the dominant Indian Furniture around that time. With the growing influence from Europe, more and more furniture were being produced in India. Most of them were for export to Europe

Materials & Production

Heritage Loom patio furniture sets are made from all-weather resin wicker and produced to fulfill your needs for high quality. The advantage of this material is its high resistance against sunlight and water. It has especially been improved to withstand North American weather. The frames are made out of powder-coated stainless aluminum, in a cage built for high stability. The cushions are treated with liquid resistant coatings. Due to the high quality materials used, Heritage Loom patio furniture sets can be left outside in any weather or season. Each and every piece is checked to ensure the quality standards are met. It is ideal for both domestic and commercial use.

All Weather Resin Wicker

All-weather resin wicker was designed predominantly for use in outdoor furniture. It looks like natural wicker, but is made of synthetic polyethylene fibres. This material only requires minimal maintenance and is extremely durable. Wicker was originally used to produce baskets and furniture. The wicker-work was made from a material called rattan. Rattan is very elastic and also sturdy and, therefore perfect to produce furniture. However, natural wicker is not very resistant against the elements. That is why most natural wicker furniture is used indoors in a sunroom or solarium nowadays. All-weather resin wicker is a very similar looking material. However, it is much more resistant against the elements. The synthetic polyethylene fibres make resin wicker extremely durable, resistant against the sun's UV-rays as well as against humidity and water. While with traditional wicker where the color is painted onto the furniture, the color of all-weather resin wicker patio furniture is contained within the fibre. Consequently, it has a much longer life-span and maintains the elegant visual appeal of the patio furniture. Resin wicker is also very elastic and sturdy, providing for great stability and seating comfort, those exact features that traditional wicker is known for. Furthermore, resin wicker requires much less maintenance. It is very easy to clean; dirt can simply be hosed off. Colors are UV resistant and do not require to be repainted.

Resin Wicker & the Environment

The resin wicker used in our patio sets is 100% recyclable. Due to its very long lifespan, our resin wicker furniture is an excellent environmental choice. It is not surprising that resin wicker has become the material of choice for swimming pool lounges, patio dining sets, outdoor sofas and terrace bistro-type settings. The new modern designs have boosted the high popularity of resin wicker furniture and it has become the new trend in the entertainment industry for patio parties, outdoor dining and lounging.

Powder Coated Aluminum Frame

All-weather resin wicker is generally used over an aluminum frame to create lightweight outdoor furniture. The frame of the patio furniture consists of rust-free powder-coated aluminum and is several times plaited. The advantage of aluminum is not only its light weight. In patio furniture construction, aluminum is superior to other metals due to its durability. It is absolutely rust-free and therefore not subject to the same degree of corrosion as steel.

Water Resistant Cushions

The cushions that come with our outdoor furniture underline the elegance of our patio sets. In harmony with the resin wicker, the cushions provide for permanent comfort when sitting. The cushions come with covers specially treated with a non-absorbent coating. This way, if you ever happen to spill any coffee or wine, you will be able to easily wipe it off, without it leaving a stain. Seams and zippers (where applicable) are hidden for a more elegant look. Covers are machine washable. The standard colour for cushions is beige as shown in the photos.

The production process A basic preliminary in all furniture production is the provision of working drawings. In a firm of any size there is invariably a special department where full-size drawings are prepared from small-scale drawings provided by the designer. In some cases the designer may make his own full-size, detailed drawings; but in a large firm it is more usual for a draftsman to work out the practical details, though usually in consultation with the designer, who advises on proportions and decorative details. The hand craftsman, in contrast, usually does the whole thing himself. More workers of the department are attached to this department. in this department labours are paid on the basis of piece wage. Piece rate system is suitable in the following situation in this industry The methods of production are standardised and job is of a repetitive nature. Production of the workers is to be increased The degree of physical work is more than the mental work. Output can be measured and quality control system exists to discourage low quality. Where work does not require personal skill of higher order.

Advantages of adopting piece rate system in this industry are as following Incentive for higher production; This system provides incentive to better to produce more and they are encouraged to realise their personal ambitions Fairness; This system ensures fairness by correlating wages and productivity. The inefficient workers are penalized as they get fewer wages. Costing; Costing of production become easier as wages from a constant factor of the unit of output Lesser supervision; cost of supervision is less as the workers need not be subjected to constant supervision. The very attraction of proper reward for better efficiency drives them to work hard Personal decision; under this system, if worker is constantly producing bad results in a particular job, he may be shifted to another job. This helps the management to identify a suitable job for a worker and his efficiency can be advantageously exploited Economy; the cost per unit can be brought down with larger output. this is possible by distributing the fixed overhead burden among a large number of unit In this department, production manager plays top role. Under his authority, there is two categories of subordinates that is carpenters and designers. Designers provide adequate designees for each furniture and according to that designs carpenters doing their work

Human resources is a term used to describe the individuals who make up the workforce of an organization, although it is also applied in labor economics to, for example, business sectors or even whole nations. Human resources is also the name of the function within an organization charged with the overall responsibility for implementing strategies and policies relating to the management of individuals (i.e. the human resources). This function title is often abbreviated to the initials "HR". Human resources is a relatively modern management term, coined as late as the 1960s. [1] The origins of the function arose in organizations that introduced 'welfare management' practices and also in those that adopted the principles of 'scientific management'. From these terms emerged a largely administrative management activity, coordinating a range of worker related processes and becoming known, in time, as the 'personnel function'. Human resources progressively became the more usual name for this function, in the first instance in the United States as well as multinational or international corporations, reflecting the adoption of a more quantitative as well as strategic approach to workforce management, demanded by corporate management to gain a competitive advantage, utilizing limited skilled and highly skilled workers. Hr department in strong in the purpose of finding suitable staff for the company requirement and providing adequate training for the staff and also promotion and high salary for performing staff.
