The study aims to find out if nursing graduates from Iligan Medical Center College were able to secure jobs related to their field of specialization at a short time after graduation.

The study discusses Leonardo Evangelista's theory on employability and Abraham Maslow's hierarchy of needs as theoretical frameworks.

CHAPTER I THE PROBLEM

Introduction A college student has to go to a particular school to pursue education and to acquire knowledge and skills in a specific field in preparation for a certain job after graduation for his or her future. It is believe that having a good job is a way of securing the future and if the job is related to the field of specialization, the graduate could be a productive citizen.

Nowadays, different schools and universities offer course, are designed and developed in accordance with the needs and demand of the labor market in order that the graduates would have a greater and wider job opportunities.

One of the paramount roles of the universities is to prepare people to get employed especially ion their own field of specialization in order to gain entry in the world of the work.

Today, medical and technological colleges and universities were established in the Philippines concerned with providing highly specialized skills sufficient to manage and to meet the demands of the labor market. One of this is Iligan Medical Center College (IMCC). The College of Nursing Midwifery and

Health Aid has been reaching that goal ever since the beginning of producing productive graduates of the course Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

Expectedly, after graduation the Bachelor of Science in Nursing graduates would have a bright opportunity for employment along their field of specialization. This motivated the researchers to conduct this study to find out if these graduates were able to secure jobs related to their field of specialization at a short time.

Theoretical Framework The members of the research team believe that the Theory of Leonardo Evangelista pertaining to Employability is enough to support the speculations of the researchers of this study. This theory states that employability is the value of the person to the labor market in relation to a specific occupation. It depends on 1.) The relationship between the supply and demand for that occupation. 2.) Unchangeable personal factors such as age, gender, physique, health, personality, belonging to a particular group which attracts government incentives for employees. 3.) Changeable personal factors such as knowledge and technical ability, flexibility and looking after oneself. The concept of this study is also in conjunction with Abraham Maslows Hierarchy of Needs. This concepts states that individuals will go stages of needs in order achieve self-esteem. There are 5 needs identified by Abraham Maslow. First is the Physiologic Needs followed by the Safety and Security

Needs followed by Love and Belonging Needs followed by Self-Actualization and followed lastly by Self-Esteem. In relation of this concept to this study, the researchers believe that people who are still looking for jobs may have lack or still didnt achieved the last stage of the hierarchy and that is Self-esteem. Because of this situation that they themselves dont want this to come upon them, people who are jobless may suffer self-esteem.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY The members of the research team aims to tackle about the employability of the graduates of the school year 2007-2008. With the findings of this research, the research team believes that it would benefit the institution as listed below:

1. The Students the members of the team believe that the findings of this research would promote awareness about unrealized facts by the students if the choice they made regarding its course is highly employable in the market or not. So by letting them know and acknowledge the findings of this study, they would realize new methods to cope with the job demands of the market today. 2. Academic Institution the researchers believe that the results of this research will benefit the academic institution for the innovation of new strategies to promote their respective course. In a way they can draw out clearer pictures about the employability of the courses they are offering in connection to the new demands of the market. 3. Society the members of the research team believes that the findings of this research would benefit the society by realizing the employability status of the Nursing course in the market today as others would like to claim that the Nursing course is IN DEMAND in the world of jobs today. 4. Researchers the members of the research team believes that this is a good opportunity to acquire information and relevance regarding the relationship of the variables.

SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF THE STUDY The members of the research team believe that in order to prevent a flight of ideas, their should be a scope and limitation of this research study. The researchers have thought make a limitation on place to a certain place of locality and a limitation of respondents to be interviewed. Place Limitation The members of the research team believes that the actual setting of this study will be conducted limited only within the vicinity of Iligan City specifically on Iligan Medical Center College in the Department of the College on Nursing, Midwifery and Health Aide (CONMHA). The team believes that the graduates of the aforementioned institution holds a promising key towards the realization of this study since the location is a prominent institution in that local region and there is a lot of potential respondents to be gathered in that area. Respondent Limitation The members of the research team aims to operate only on the graduates of Iligan Medical Center College specifically on the graduates of 2007-2008 school year of the College of Nursing, Midwifery and Health Aide. The members of the research team believes that given the vast number of the students of this graduates, this will show a potential market good for acquiring an approximate accuracy of the data to be gathered.

Statement of the Problem The members of the research team aims to sought the respondents of the above mentioned institutution to the employability status in connection to improving oneself. In line with this, the members of the research team would like to answer the following questions: 1. What is the profile of the respondents in terms of the ff: i. ii. iii. iv. Age Gender Civil Status License to practice

2. Are there significant differences on the respondents employability when they are group according to the following variables: Age Gender Civil Status License to practice

3. What is the rate of the employed and unemployed graduates of Iligan Medical Center College of School Year 2007-2008 4. What are the examples of factors that promote employability? 5. What are the examples of factors that promote unemployables?

Null Hypothesis Problem 1, 4 and 5 is hypothesis free. The hypothesis is framed from problem two for statistical testing, to wit;

2. There is no significant difference on the respondents employability when they are group according to the following variables: 2.1. Age 2.2. Gender 2.3. Civil Status 2.4. Economic Status

Definition of Terms Terms that are defined in this study are defined on operational basis. They are defined according to their use during the operations. Civil Status status of the respondents pertaining if they are married or single. Dependent variables these are variables that cannot stand alone and do not expresses a complete thought. Employability Status it is the status of the graduates to determine if they are working or not. Employed status of the respondents who are actually working. Graduates these are students who already finished the course of Bachelor of Science in Nursing in Iligan Medical Center College last school year 20072008.

Independent variables these are variables that can stand alone and expresses a complete thought. License it is the approval of the higher authority (Philippine Regulatory Commission) to allow a graduate to practice their finished course. Unemployed status of the respondents that signifies that they still have no work/job.

CHAPTER II REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDY

It was suggested by the skills plus steering group that it would be useful to understand employability from the perspective of those who recently graduated. As a counterpoint to the projects investigation of employed graduates, an exploratory study was carried out IN February to march 2001 of the ten of their unemployed peers. Unemployed was used in its literal sense with the qualification that the individual was unwilling.

The term employability skills refer to those skills required to acquire a job. In the pat, employability skilld were considered to be primarily of a vocatiuonal or job-specific nature. They were not thought to include the academic skills most commonly taught in the schools. Current thinking, however, has broadened the definition of employability skills to include not only many foundational academic skills but also a variety of attitudes and habits.

In fact, in recent usage, the term employability skills is often used to described the preparation of foundation skills upon which a person must build job-specific skills. Among these foundational skills are those which relate to communication, personal and interpersonal relationships, problem solving and management of organizational processes. Employability skills in this sense are

valued because they apply to many jobs and so can support common preparation to meet the needs of many different occupations.

The concept of employability skills originated with educators, primarily those working on programs specifically designed to facilitate employment. Employers, although the primary determiners of the skills that will actually enable an individual to acquire and retain a job have traditionally focused on job-specific skills. Assessment for employment where used most frequently have consisted or general ability and personality tests supplemented by job-specific assessment.

In recent years, that picture has changed dramatically with ever growing numbers of employers assessing foundational skills, primarily in reading and mathematics, prior to hiring. This is probably due to the joint effects of an increasing demand for these skills on the job and employer dissatisfaction with the levels of those skills demonstrated by applicants. Even today, however, educators show greater interest in employability skills assessment than do employers. This is probably due to employers concerns about legal implication of any assessment that might have an adverse impact.

CHAPTER III Research Methodology Research Design This study uses the descriptive survey research design to examine the employability of the respondents. This study analyzes certain factor that tends to influence the employability of the graduates over the school year 2006-2007.

Research Setting According to the Place limitation and Respondent Limitation of Chapter I, the only study area involves the vicinity of Iligan City, specifically the graduates of the College of Nursing, Midwifery and Health Aide of Iligan Medical Center College. Finding out variations of the employability of the graduates is given high priority on this study. This is where the members of the research team and the faculty and staff of the College of Nursing, Midwifery and Health Aide Department converged to pour their resources and efforts for the accomplishments of this study.

Sampling Procedure This study is using the snow ball sampling procedure. In the actual selection of the respondents, a snow ball sampling technique will be used. The researcher will use the sample standard deviation method in estimating the sample size. The sample size of the respondents study was determined at a level of confidence of 0.05 using a two-tailed test.

Four Hundred (400) respondents were considered for the sampling of this study, which will distribute among the different graduates of the aforementioned institution. The respondents will come from the graduates of Iligan medical Center College from the Department of Nursing, Midwifery and Health Aide.

Data Gathering Procedure and Instrument Used With the endorsement from the institution of Iligan Medical Center College, the researchers will ask first permission to conduct data gathering from the office of the Dean of the College of Nursing, Midwifery and Health Aide and likewise the members requested consent from the faculty of the concerned department for the clearance on gathering the information in the aforementioned respondents. Likewise, data collection will be done through survey questionnaire which will be reviewed and examined by the research panel examiners from the concern department before actual survey schedule will be conducted. The data generated on the different respondents on the questionnaire will be used to evaluate the presence of any significant differences.

Statistical Treatment To answer the problems and to test the hypothesis of this study, the researcher used different statistical treatments. The information gathered was organized, coded, tabulated and summarized. This served as basis for

interpretations and analysis. This study used specifically the following statistical tools: 1. Descriptive statistics, such as mean, percentage, frequency distribution and standard deviation in answering problems 1 and 2, that is the respondents socio-economic profile. A. Percentage
