Ev er since EMC released the the VNX 1 I hav e been itching to get m y hands on a sim u lator to try it out. Now seeing that Chad 2 and Nick 3 are not ones to leav e us hanging for long, I started to ask for it straight after the lau nch. I was told that it wou ld be out, in the not too distance fu ture. Yesterday , I saw that Nick Weav er had done it again 4. Just som e things to note: NFS/CIFS only (at the m om ent) One datam ov er only So here is m y installation experience. Dow nload links can be fou nd on Nick's post 5. I w ill not go into how y ou im port that into y our ESX host - that should be pretty straight forw ard by now. The appliance com es configured by default w ith: 1 v CPU 2 GB RAM 1 40GB IDE Hard disk 3 e1 000 NICs
Thin prov isioned this takes u p 6 .5 GB of disk space. So let u s Pow er on the appliance.

Next w e create a network interface that will serv e as NFS for this filesy stem . This dev ice w ill u se interface cge0 (Network Adapter 2 ) w hich in m y specific case is not on the sam e netw ork as the m anagem ent netw ork but - 1 92 .1 6 8.1 66.x And w e now hav e a new interface on the netw ork.

And w e now hav e tw o Hosts connected to the shared storage.
I hav e to confess, to actually perform the procedure took less than 8 m inutes (really) from power on till I had shared storage that I could access from an ESX host. The screenshots took ov er an hour. My take on this as com pared to the UBER VSA 7 . The GUI is much m ore user friendly . I hav e not gone into how the snapshots and Data Protection work and how they are configu red, but that w ill com e. Again m y hats off to the EMC Crew for prov iding u s a tool that is fully functional and w orking that allows us to get a fell of the new products and their features before actually buy ing the produ ct. The usu al w ord of w arning thou gh.. This is not su pported by EMC. Support is throu gh the Ev ery thing VMw are at EMC com m u nity 8only . Happy Uber'ing p.s. My apologies for not being so activ e lately - too m uch going on.
