Floridas Nonagricultural Employment by Industry (Seasonally Adjusted)

The number of jobs in Florida was 7,323,000 in May 2012, up 53,800 jobs compared to a year ago. May
was the 22nd consecutive month with positive annual job growth after the state lost jobs for three years. The
industry gaining the most jobs was professional and business services (+24,900 jobs, +2.4 percent).

Other industries gaining jobs included trade, transportation, and utilities (+21,300 jobs, +1.4 percent); private
education and health services (+19,900 jobs, +1.8 percent); leisure and hospitality (+16,100 jobs, +1.7
percent); financial activities (+5,700 jobs, +1.2 percent); manufacturing (+4,900 jobs, +1.6 percent); and
information (+200 jobs, +0.1 percent).

These industry job gains were partially due to increases in employment services; clothing and accessory
stores; ambulatory health care services; accommodation and food services; real estate; and fabricated metal
product manufacturing.

Industries losing jobs over the year included construction (-22,200 jobs, -6.6 percent), total government
(-13,100 jobs, -1.2 percent), and other services (-3,900 jobs, -1.3 percent).

These industry job losses were partially due to declines in specialty trade contractors, state government, and
repair and maintenance.
Local Area Unemployment Statistics (Not Seasonally Adjusted)

In May 2012, Monroe County (4.9 percent) had the states lowest unemployment rate, followed by Walton
County (5.3 percent), Okaloosa County (5.9 percent), Franklin County (6.1 percent), and Lafayette County
(6.5 percent). Many of the counties with the lowest unemployment rates were those with relatively high
proportions of government employment.

Flagler and Hendry counties had the highest unemployment rate (11.7 percent each) in Florida in May 2012,
followed by Hernando and St. Lucie counties (10.9 percent each); and Indian River County (10.4 percent).
Over-the-year job losses in information and leisure and hospitality; long-term job losses in construction; and
seasonal declines in agriculture contributed to the high unemployment rates. There were eight Florida
counties with double-digit unemployment rates in May, up from five in April.
Area Nonagricultural Employment (Not Seasonally Adjusted)

Nine metro areas of the 22 in the state had over-the-year job gains in May 2012. The areas with the largest
gains were Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater (+17,300 jobs, +1.5 percent), Miami-Miami Beach-Kendall
(+15,700 jobs, +1.6 percent), and Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford (+4,400 jobs, +0.4 percent).

Of the metro areas with job declines, the largest losses were in Pensacola-Ferry Pass-Brent (-4,700 jobs,
-2.9 percent), Tallahassee (-4,300 jobs, -2.6 percent), and Gainesville (-2,600 jobs, -2.1 percent).
Note: These unemployment and job growth rates are estimates, which are primarily based on surveys created and mandated by the U.S.
Bureau of Labor Statistics in cooperation with the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity.
The unemployment rate is derived from Florida household surveys conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau under contract with the U.S. Bureau
of Labor Statistics. The job growth rate is derived from Florida employer surveys conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Both estimates are revised on a monthly basis. In addition, these estimates are benchmarked (revised) annually based on actual counts from
Florida's Unemployment Compensation tax records and other data.
New procedures mandated by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics may result in more variable month-to-month changes. For further
information, go to: http://www.bls.gov/sae/cesprocs.htm
