2 WHO DO YOU CONSIDER A LEADER?

Introduction Do leaders get recognition for what they do? How do people know that someone is a leader? What influences the recognition of leaders? What we see as an audience in the media is not the full truth; you get half truths. Unfortunately, the media in a sense makes people followers. They know what people want: people want to hear about drama, crimes, and people pulling each others hair, something that will stir up a commotion. Its unfortunate that people fall slaves for this. But one if there wasnt any media, the people that are idolized, would they be leaders? In a sense, people wouldnt really recognize them as leaders if the media didnt make them look that way. The media in a sense makes a public figure rise and fall in a lot of cases. For example, Bill Clinton was a good leader. He had the perfect family, He was making changes to the world; Things couldnt of looked better. He looked like a leader. He respected his citizens and his citizens for the most part respected him. All of a sudden the media gets this great story of how Bill is having an affair with his hot young intern Monica Lewinsky. He denied it at first, but people didnt buy it. People started to lose respect for this leader. He was supposed to be a role model. How could he do this? But If the media had not gotten this story, would we still look at him the same? The media has done some good for some other individuals. One person that many may consider a leader is John Walsh. Many people may recognize John Walsh as the guy that hosts Americas Most Wanted. Behind every leader is a story. John Walsh was a hotel developer who moved from New York State to Florida with his wife. One day, while shopping with his young son, Adam , he noticed that Adam was missing. Later the Walshes find out that Adam was abducted from the mall they were shopping at. A couple of weeks later, Adams remains were

found. This tragic loss stuck with John and His family and for 27 long years , the case remained unsolved. In December 2008, the case was reopened and there was an arrest in the murder of Adam Walsh. (amw.com). The case of Adam Walsh, helped the U.S. create the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children in 1984 and soon after, President Ronald Reagan signed the Missing Childrens Assistance Act. John Walsh has worked with political leaders, non-profit organizations and Law enforcement to have children be protected not only in the United States but in some cases from Canada. John Walsh has been honored on five different occasions by four different presidents such as Bill Clinton, Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush and George Bush. In fact, Ronald Reagan recognized John Walshs work twice (amw.com). What makes John Walsh a leader? The personality of John Wash shows the different leadership traits. One of the most important traits of a leader is the leaders charisma. John is considered a competent leader because he delivers to the public by his determination to problem solve around catching criminals and exhibited clear result focused on problems (Bateman, 2010). According to Expert
power, referent power and Charisma, charismatic leaders are thought to possess attractive

qualities, such as high levels of confidence that attracts the followers. Johns determination and passion helps the viewers (which in this case are followers) want to catch the criminals. He makes people put themselves in the shoes of the victim and he also makes the viewers think. Expert and referent power. Expert and referent power have the greatest influence on the followers attitude measures such as commitment, satisfaction, and motivation (Expert power, Referent power and Charisma). John had experience of being a victim of a crime. His son was

murdered and he has been able to empathize with victims of crimes. Most people who watch Americas most wanted know about the Adam Walsh murder case (which comes up from time to time when John covers a story about a child being victimized in a crime). This type of power is called expert power because John is able to Leadership paradigm shared mindset that represents a fundamental way of thinking about and perceiving , studying , researching and understanding leadership (Leadership and motivation textbook). John has something in common with most viewers- he wants criminals off the street and justice served. I.E. Everyones responsibility to fight crime .Presidents , law enforcement , etc Experiences- victim of a crime , effected by the death of his son Vision of John Walsh: Imagine different and better conditions and ways to achieve them

Motivation process- of viewers of the show and John Walsh Expectancy theory- people are motivated when they believe they can accomplish task reward and the reward will be worth the effort (Leadership and motivation textbook). Networking- The importance of it and who John is Networking with. John Walsh networks with different law enforcement agencies and organizations that help victims of crime to educate the audience and also to give recognition to the work the agency does.
