History of chocolate

Chocolate is a food made from cacao beans. Each People eats almost 12 pounds of chocolate per year. The cacao tree, whose pods contain seeds that can be processed into chocolate, was discovered 2,000 years ago in the tropical rainforests of the Americas. The first people known to have consumed cacao were the Mayas.They mixed ground cacao (cocoa) seeds with seasonings to make a bitter, spicy drink that was believed to be a health elixir. To the Mayans, cocoa pods symbolized life and fertility. In central Mexico, the Aztecs believed that wisdom and power came from eating the fruit of the cocoa tree, and that it had aphrodisiac qualities. Europeans got their first taste of chocolate in 1519, when Montezuma offered the spicy drink to Spanish explorer Corts and his army. The Spanish conquistadors brought cocoa seeds back to Spain, where they introduced new spices and sugar to the liquid concoction called "xocoatl".

In reality, the history of Sweetest Day dates back to 1922 when a man by the name of Herbert Birch Kingston wanted to bring cheer to local orphans, home bound people and others he felt may feel a little "forgotten" during other holidays. Kingston worked for a candy company in Cleveland, Ohio and started giving out candy to all the little "sweets" in the community. Following his initial efforts, local candy makers in Cleveland began to continue the tradition of giving and called it "The Sweetest Day of the Year" and distributed over 10,000 boxes of candy to over 26 Cleveland area charities their first year.

Types of chocolate

Dark chocolate contains healthful substances similar to those found in tea, red wine, fruits, and vegetables. Milk chocolate is the best-selling variety of chocolate in the world today. It is sweeter and smoother than dark chocolate. In many countries, white chocolate is not classified as chocolate at all, as it contains no cocoa solids. White "chocolate" is the most fragile form of all chocolates.
