June 2012 Dear New YorkPenn League Fans: Welcome to the 73rd consecutive year of the New York-Penn League, the oldest, continuously operated CLASS A league in professional baseball. Attendance during the 2011 season was excellent once again. The New York-Penn League finished with a collective attendance of 1,749,891, the tenth consecutive season of exceeding 1.74 million fans. The Connecticut and Tri-City clubs set all-time franchise single-season attendance records in 2011. This was the seventh year in a row that the Tri-City club posted an increase in attendance. The 2011 season ended with the Staten Island Yankees beating the Auburn Doubledays 2-1 for the League Championship. This was the Baby Bombers second title in three years, and the sixth in the past twelve years. The 8th annual New York-Penn League All-Star Game will be hosted by the Mahoning Valley Scrappers at Eastwood Field (Niles, OH) on Tuesday, August 14th. The 2012 All-Star Game will pit the best prospects from the Leagues seven National League affiliates against the Leagues seven American League affiliates. 2012 Scholarship Program

The 2012 NYPL Scholarship Program is open to any graduating senior from a public or private high school within the leagues footprint, who has been accepted at any two or four-year college or university, vocational or technical education institution. Applicants will be judged based on academic performance, volunteer and extracurricular activities, and the impact their local NYPL club and Minor League Baseball has had on their lives. The Scholarship Program will consist of two stages a local round and a divisional round. In the local stage, students will apply directly with their local NYPL team, with one applicant chosen by each of the 14 teams to advance to the divisional round. The 14 finalists will be separated by the division of the team they represent. The winning application from each of the NYPLs three divisions (McNamara, Pinckney and Stedler. The scholarships top prize includes three winners of a $2,500 scholarship and eleven winners of $250 each for books. The New York-Penn League Charitable Foundation initiated the scholarship program in 2009 as a way to assist high school seniors from within our leagues footprint who not only meet and exceed traditional scholarship criteria, but have also demonstrated the positive benefits their local NYPL club has had on their life, said Ben J. Hayes, President of the New York-Penn League. The Foundation is pleased to have this scholarship program in place and to support our 14 member clubs in their year-round community outreach efforts. Students must have a 3.0 GPA (on a 4.0 scale) and participate in extracirricular activities. Applicant should also be involved with community service and be able to provide references. A copy of a high school transcript and letter of acceptance to institution must be included in application. In 2011, the three $2,500 scholarships were awarded to students from the Staten Island Yankees, Mahoning Valley Scrappers and Vermont Lake Monsters. For more information and to Apply visit

BRINGING CHEERS FOR 73 YEARS

This league was founded in 1939 with the name Pennsylvania-Ontario-New York League. This was generally shortened to PONY League. The original teams included the Batavia Clippers; the Bradford Bees; the Hamilton Red Wings; the Jamestown Jaguars; the Niagara Falls Rainbows; and the Olean Oilers. The Oilers, a Brooklyn Dodgers affiliate, won both the regular-season and playoff championships. The Hamilton Red Wings folded early in the 1956 season, and with no more teams in Ontario, the league adopted its current name in 1957. The league crossed back into Canada with the formation of the St. Catharines Blue Jays in 1986. They were joined by the Hamilton Redbirds in 1987 and the Welland Pirates in 1989, but all three clubs had moved back stateside by 2000.
