Linear Assign

The document provides examples of linear equations and functions relating various quantities. Students are asked to write linear equations to model several real-world situations involving costs that vary depending on other factors like time, distance, weight, area, etc. Students must determine the equations and calculate values based on the given scenarios.

Linear Equations Final Project

You have been given a situation that can be modeled by a linear function. As a group it is your job to decide what function defines the situation and to prepare a poster that tells the class everything you know about this function. We have learned many ways to describe and define functions and now is your chance to show what you know! A good place to start might be by reviewing your notes or looking through chapter 5 in your book. That might jog your memory on what weve learned. Your poster should include, but is not limited to the following: Your function represented as an equation, table of values and in words. What any variable you are using represent.(a let statement) A graph(appropriately labeled and scaled) for your function Remember the independent variable goes on the horizontal axis, the dependent variable goes on the vertical axis. The domain and range of your function What type of variation your function has. Any assumptions you might have made while creating your function At least one challenging question for you classmates to solve relating to your function. Any additional information or graphics you feel would be useful. You will be marked based on the attached rubric. Be sure to read it before starting so you know what is expected. To buy a quart of paint at Rona costs $23.00 and one quart covers 50 square feet. Determine the total cost of paint as a function of the number of square feet you will be painting.

If your bedroom was 11' by 8' with 9' ceilings, a single 3' foot by 2' window and a standard 2' by 8' door, how much will it cost you to paint your walls? If your bedroom is 4 m by 3 m with a 3 m ceiling and a 0.75m by 2.5 m door, what would it cost to paint your walls?

When you call for a taxi the operator tells you that there is a flat rate of $3.00 plus an additional 25 cents/min. Write an appropriate equation that will help you determine the total cost as a function of time.

If you hire a taxi and drive for half an hour what will be your total cost? If the total cost of your ride is $63.70 how long did you drive for?

The Brick is offering a special on all in-store purchases that states You only pay half the taxes Assuming the current rates of g.s.t.(5%) and p.s.t.(7%) determine an equation that would tell you how much tax you will pay on your purchase as a function of the price before tax.

If you purchase a couch for $499 a t.v. for $769 and a coffee table for $139 what will be the tax you pay? If your total cost was $1659.33 what was the cost before tax?

Your math teacher tells the class she will give you your Math 9 mark PLUS an additional 25% of your Math 9 mark if you can determine an equation that would define the new mark. Write an equation of your new mark as a function of your Math 9 mark? Your friend received a mark of 78% in math 9, what will be their mark in Math 10 according to the formula? Your math 9 mark was 13% better than your friend's. What will be your math 10 mark?

An ant can carry up to 49 times its own body weight. Determine a function for the total weight of an ant if it was carrying to its maximum ability as a function of its body weight. The total weight of the ant and its load is 162g, what is the weight of the ant? If the ant can carry 157g what is the weight of the ant?

Every year the cost of university rises by approximately $163.00. Assuming that in the first year the cost is $4246.00 determine an equation to find the cost of university for each year afterwards as a function of time. How much will university cost in 2015?

The total cost is $5387.00 What year is it?(Assuming that the first year is 2009)

A runner can complete a 42 kilometer marathon in 4 hours and 48 minutes. Describe an equation that would define the total distance run as a function of time.

How far could the runner get in 53 hours and 6 minutes? How long would it take the runner to run 70261 meters?

You are building a house and have priced out the various necessities. The contractor and trades workers charge a fee of $55/square foot, building materials work out to $32/square foot and the appropriate permits are assessed at a fee of $7/square foot. Write the appropriate equation for the total cost of building a house as a function of its square footage. I want to build a house that is 15 m by 22 m. How much will it cost me? The first floor of my house is 50' by 72' and the upper floor is 1/4 that size. What did it cost to build?
