The document provides instructions for troubleshooting charging system issues on 1988/91 Honda Civics and CRXs. It describes how to check for proper voltage readings and outputs under various conditions like with the engine running or headlights turned on.

The document outlines 12 steps to troubleshoot the charging system, including checking fuse boxes, wiring, and voltage readings at specific test points with the engine on and accessories turned on/off.

Proper voltage readings include having voltage present with the engine running and accessories off, and having voltage drop by less than 0.2V under a full load with engine running at 2000rpm. No voltage should be present with accessories off and engine off.

Important Information
The alternators on these vehicles are controlled by the Electronic Control Unit (ECU) in conjunction with the Electric Load Detector (ELD). Charging rates may vary depending on engine load, speed and temperature as well as alternator loads.

WARNING !
These units do not charge under certain conditions. The charge warning light will be off but the system voltage will be set at 12.5Vdc. To override this function STEP ON THE BRAKE. This will activate the alternator control circuits and allow the alternator to charge.
