Lean To Plan
Lean To Plan
This lean-to design was created using dimensions from the New York State Department of Environmental plans that were commonly used by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s and is still used by the state today. Thank you to Keith Gorgas and Cynthia Gorgas for their contributions. Please feel free to use these plans under one condition: If you discover an improvement, you let me know so I can continue to better this design. We would love any pictures of completed lean-tos.

~The six inch cabin logs should be sawn out of logs that are 7-8 on the small end. ~The four inch cabin logs should be sawn out of logs that are 5-6 on the small end. ~Mill and Hammer will gladly provide you with the materials needed to build this lean-to, or you should be able to have any local sawmill cut them for you. ~Layout the four chimney blocks level, and in the same plane, in an 8x12 rectangle. Check the diagonals to make sure it is square. ~Dig a three to four foot hole in the center of each block and fill with concrete. ~To add a finishing touch, mortar baseball sized rocks to the chimney blocks.

~This design creates a six foot clearance in the front of the lean-to. To add a foot of clearance, add two rows to the back and side walls. ~The bottom course should not overhang the blocks more than one inch. ~The vertical cut is made six inches back from the front of the front chimney blocks. ~Use an eight inch half log to cap the ends of the vertical cut. ~Use half of one of the twelve foot logs for the 13th row. The 14th and 15th rows are both made from one eight foot log. ~The peak of the roof is eight inches deeper into the lean-to from the vertical cut.
