Social networking provides benefits of connecting people globally and easily sharing information, but also has disadvantages. Spending excessive time online can cause social isolation as people interact less in person, which studies link to higher rates of depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues. Additionally, overuse of social media can absorb free time otherwise spent on real-world communication. While social networks allow spreading ideas, they also risk spreading misinformation and exposing personal information that could damage reputations. Moderation is important to gain benefits while avoiding negative impacts on health, productivity, and social skills.

Social Networking: Benefits and disadvantages for our society

The world is changing and it is changing at a very intense pace. Nobody these days can say that our society of todays world is the same as it was 20 years ago. Not that long time ago we couldve said that technology changes our society, but now the society is demanding a change in technology. New Media created new ways of communication, entertainment, advertising, education, etc. Social Networking enables us to communicate with anyone and anywhere. People of all ages, races and classes, which have access to new media technology, are empowered to communicate with anyone they want. This instant and low cost communication also changed our society by simply making it global. Teenagers and children spend enormous amount of time on Internet, they learn a lot by communicating with others and at the same time miss out on real life communication. There is simply no need of real life interaction, since all of that is moved online. New Media have changed distribution of information and coordination and it certainly does make our lives better with faster, cheaper and easier technology, but does it make our lives safer. Social media has changed the way people interact. In many ways, social media has led to positive changes in the way people communicate and share information. It is a very useful tool for the exchange of information and last news; however, it has a dark side, as well. Social networking can sometimes result in negative outcomes, some with long-term consequence scan do for you.

1. People who spend many hours in front of their monitors can simply lose their communication skills because online conversation is very unemotional that lead them to Isolation. While on the surface it appears social networking brings people together across the Internet, in a larger sense it may create social isolation, according to a BBC News report. As people spend increasing amounts of time on social networks, they experience less face-to-face interaction. Scientists have evaluated social isolation in many studies, and have determined that it can lead to a host of mental, psychological, emotional and physical problems including depression, anxiety, somatic complaints and many others. In fact, a University of Illinois at Chicago School of Medicine animal study showed social isolation impaired brain hormones, which is the likely reason socially isolated people experience tremendous levels of stress, aggression, anxiety and other mental issues.

2. For such people everyday checking of personal pages becomes a ritual. If they cannot do, it can irritate them.

2. Social networks absorb a lot of time. In stead of real communication, people waste their free time in the Internet. 3. Negative Health Consequences A 2010 Case Western Reserve School of Medicine study showed hyper-networking (more than three hours on social networks per day) and hyper texting (more than 120 text messages per day) correlated with unhealthy behaviors in teens, including drinking, smoking and sexual activity. Hyper-networking was also associated with depression, substance abuse, poor sleep patterns, suicide and poor academic performance.

While the above studies show actual correlations between social networking and negative consequences, others argue that many other negative consequences may exist that have not yet been studied. Some of the harmful effects people suggest social networking has that have not yet yielded conclusive study results include:

Encouraging poor grammar, usage, and spelling Allowing the spread of misinformation that may be perceived as fact even in light of evidence to the contrary Exposing children to online predators Creating a culture in which a single mistake such as a racy picture or poorly thought-out comment can cause irreparable harm to your reputation Decreasing productivity as workers habitually check social networking sites while they should be working Providing information that increases the risk of identity theft Creating a platform for cyber bullying Decreasing the Impact

Finally, the Internet can be a very useful and dangerous at the same time. It can absorb and save time. It can help people find friends and at the same time can lead to the losing of communication skills. I recommend people to be very careful in order to avoid negative effects of the Internet that can lead to depression.

From the sociological perspective social networks will have a positive effect on the society. It makes our society globalized since everyone who has connection to new media technology is able to communicate with anyone they want. This gives us an opportunity to learn about different cultures, religion and different societies.
