Holy Fathers Prayer Intention for May 2012 Each month, Pope Benedict chooses two prayer intentions, one for the concerns of the whole church and one for missionaries. We are invited to join the Holy Father in praying for these intentions. General Intention: The Family. That initiatives which defend and uphold the role of the family may be promoted within society. Missionary Intention: Mary, Guide of Missionaries. That Mary, Queen of the World and Star of Evangelization, may accompany all missionaries in proclaiming her Son Jesus.
Pro-Life Quote from National Right to Life The argument for legalizing physician-assisted suicide rests on a false premise: Everyone knows that suffering from advanced disease is inevitable; therefore everyone should have the right to kill themselves, so as to avoid unbearable suffering. This is simply not true. What everyone knows is false. Our ability to relieve suffering and improve quality of life has never been more powerful. (Dr. Charles F. Von Gunten, San Diego Union Tribune, 5/3/09) Stewardship Thought: It is fitting on this Pentecost Sunday that the Scripture passages speak of the works of the Holy Spirit in the early Christian community. In St. Johns Gospel, Jesus gives His disciples the gifts of the Spirit, peace, and the power to forgive sins. In his First Letter to the Corinthians, St. Paul encourages the faithful to live in unity and to appreciate each others gifts, service, and works granted by the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit as one body in Christ. As Christian stewards, what do we bring weekly to the Eucharistic table through our God-given gifts of time, talent, and treasure to serve our parish communion to build up the Body of Christ? Development Thought: The month of May brings two things to mind: First, across the country, May is often touted as Make a Will Month. If you are creating a Will for the first time or planning to update yours (a rule of thumb is every five years), please remember our parish or the needs of our diocese. Second, with this being Memorial Day weekend, it is an appropriate time to remind our parishioners to consider our parish in your memorial giving, or to designate our parish as the recipient of memorial gifts when a loved one passes away. Our church is dependent upon the blessed gifts offered by thoughtful parishioners. Thank you for your kind consideration!

In October of 2005, Pope Benedict XVI met with a group of children who had just received their First Holy Communion. Some of the children were able to ask the Pope questions. By reflecting on the Holy Fathers answers, we can join these children in growing in our faith. In preparing me for my First Communion day, my catechist told me that Jesus is present in the Eucharist. But how? I can't see him! No, we cannot see him, but there are many things that we do not see but they exist and are essential. For example: we do not see our reason, yet we have reason. We do not see our intelligence and we have it. In a word: we do not see our soul and yet it exists and we see its effects, because we can speak, think and make decisions, etc. Nor do we see an electric current, for example, yet we see that it exists; we see this microphone, that it is working, and we see lights. Therefore, we do not see the very deepest things, those that really sustain life and the world, but we can see and feel their effects. This is also true for electricity; we do not see the electric current but we see the light. So it is with the Risen Lord: we do not see him with our eyes but we see that wherever Jesus is, people change, they improve. A greater capacity for peace, for reconciliation, etc., is created. Therefore, we do not see the Lord himself but we see the effects of the Lord: so we can understand that Jesus is present. And as I said, it is precisely the invisible things that are the most profound, the most important. So let us go to meet this invisible but powerful Lord who helps us to live well.
CD of the Month Club If we are to be followers of Jesus Christ, we need to be continually learning about the faith and growing spiritually. Catechesis, the process of Faith education, doesnt stop at Confirmation or High School graduation, but is a life-long process. To aid in this process, the parish is making available the Lighthouse Catholic Media CD of the Month Club. Every month, a new talk or audiobook excerpt is released. Not only is the current months CD available - From Love - By Love - For Love by Fr. Michael Schmitz - but a number of previous months CDs can be picked up as well. Each CD averages about 1 hour long, and is filled with great Catholic teaching, uplifting stories, and excellent speakers. Theyre great in the car, working around home, or anywhere you have a CD player! Theyre also excellent resources whenever someone has a question about a teaching of the Catholic Faith. If you or someone you know wants to learn more about the Catholic Faith, or if questions come up, pick one up today!
Your Holiness, everyone tells us that it is important to go to Mass on Sunday. We would gladly go to it, but often our parents do not take us because on Sundays they sleep. The parents of a friend of mine work in a shop, and we often go to the country to visit our grandparents. Could you say something to them, to make them understand that it is important to go to Mass together on Sundays? I would think so, of course, with great love and great respect for your parents, because they certainly have a lot to do. However, with a daughter's respect and love, you could say to them: "Dear Mommy, dear Daddy, it is so important for us all, even for you, to meet Jesus. This encounter enriches us. It is an important element in our lives. Let's find a little time together, we can find an opportunity. Perhaps there is also a possibility where Grandmom lives". In brief, I would say, with great love and respect for your parents, I would tell them: "Please understand that this is not only important for me, it is not only catechists who say it, it is important for us all. And it will be the light of Sunday for all our family".
