GRADE 11 ENGLISH THE CRUCIBLE POSTER ASSESSMENT

Poster C precisely depicts The Crucible by Arthur Miller. It signifies the control Abigail Williams has over the town of Salem and the burden she bestows on John Proctor. It shows the influence that Abigail has over the community and the pressure she puts on the head of the Proctors family. One may suggest that Abigail Williams molds this whole play. She discovers ways and schemes to conceal her bad behavior because it will reveal her secrets. It may seem as though the affair with John Proctor takes responsibility for the witch trials throughout the play. Abigail removed herself from the scene of the crime as her accusing finger points to others of witchcraft. However, being accused of a whore with a vengeance, describes the desperate act of her self-preservation that finally becomes Abigail's defense for power. Abigail Williams may be seen to one as ultimately the vehicle that drives the play and as seen in the poster as the self-proclaimed puppet master with her marvelous pretenders. She controls the nooses and therefore the lives of the people of Salem. Abigail is a heavy weight on Proctor, because he sees her saintliness [as] done with. One could assume that John Proctor stays true to himself and his friends during the play where the devils loose in Salem. In addition to that, Proctor experiences internal conflict of guilt which weighs heavy on him and has a great influence over his relationship with Elizabeth. In the poster a strong but weakened John is placed, his sins have taken their toll on him and seem to be the root of all his problems. Moreover, after ending the sinful affair with Abigail, the relationship between Proctor and Elizabeth has been strained to say the least, as the powers of darkness branch out through Salem. Proctor's attempts to please Elizabeth are always met with her suspicion where "[he was] alone with [Abigail]", and Elizabeth's feelings of suspicion are evident. One may propose that John Proctor portrays Elizabeths behavior as an everlasting funeral and her justice that would freeze beer, however he has an undying love for her which is appreciated in the final Act. Overall, The Crucible shows the meaning of hysteria and what can happen when a majority comes into control and when the public is affected by a belief that goes along with the majorities beliefs. It is clear that Abigail met her downfall and although it was a battle, the good overcame the evil. In the end, Salem is left with the truth and a dying tree.
