THE PRIMER

Winter 2011

Presidents Message Mark Adams, 2011 President

Well it looks as though many of us may be getting a lot busier thanks to Mother Nature. With all the snow, ice and now rain there are all kinds of damage occurring and It seems as though Mother Nature may do what all of the politicians and economists have not been able to; help pull industry out of the basement. Some of us have found new business add on items such as roof and gutter cleaning. We have managed to help some of our customers out by doing this work. I think there are also a couple of very important things to remember - our ethics and peoples very long memories. We are hearing many stories of price gouging and I am proud to say I have not heard any about PDCA Members. This is an incredible opportunity to help people out while still making your normal hourly wage and maybe make a customer for life; events like this can forge relationships. I would like to take a moment to thank the NEC Executive Committee for their hard work and their visions for this year. We had a tremendously productive board meeting in Massachusetts in January and look forward to spreading the excitement. Please plan now to set the time aside for the NEC Educational Conference and Vendor Expo November 10 - 12, 2011, Lake Morey Inn, Fairlee, VT. And now I am going to ask for your help. We have all been fortunate in having belonged to PDCA and have benefited from the relationships formed and knowledge received through this brotherhood of fellow contractors. What I am asking is for you to share your experiences with other contractors and tell them of the benefits of the PDCA and how they can help improve the industry with their membership. I am reminded of a class with Irv Chasen who said he improved his business by helping those around him improve theirs; therefore leveling the field. We know this is a changing world and everyones involvement in associations means something different and their depth of involvement may be different than what we ourselves may be used to. Lets find out what they are looking for, embrace it and get them involved at their level. Thank You Mark Adams, NEC President Southington Painting Co., LLC Phone-860-628-8923 / Cell: 860-302-2158 [email protected]

2010 Educational Conference Review

Jennifer McSharry / co-owner - Kurt Dwyer Painting
My husband, Kurt Dwyer, and I have been PDCA members for the last two years. We got so much out of the first New England Conference we attended in 2008 that we joined the PDCA on the spot. At that time, our company was on a downward slope, the economy was getting worse every day, and we were not getting any phone calls. Through what we learned from the PDCA, we were able to reinvent our company. This past November was our third NEC conference. Each conference is different but the primary focus is always on furthering our education in both technical and business related areas. The conferences, in addition to the monthly chapter meetings, give members a unique opportunity to work with other painters in a non-competitive environment to help each other grow and thrive as professionals in our industry. This years conference was beneficial on many levels, from the workshops NEC staff put together, to the invaluable peerto-peer networking that takes place, to the vendor expo; there was never a dull moment! The workshops schedule for this years conference ranged in topics from, how to successfully hire and fire employees, Quick-Books - tips, tricks, and shortcuts, building a high performance painting company to, meeting challenges in the Green paint arena, social media, and customer buying trends. Kurt and my personal favorites this year were the workshops facilitated by Richard Greene (Building a High Performance Painting Company) and Debbie Zimmerman (Social Media the New Marketing & Customer Buying Trends What Words Trigger a Yes). Both of these speakers are highly energized and exceptionally motivating. As members of the PDCA, Kurt and I feel privileged to belong to a group of supportive and generous professionals who are on our team. The PDCA has helped us turn our business around and because we are members, we are in a better position for growth and success.

PDCA 2010 Leadership Training Review

Jennifer McSharry / co-owner - Kurt Dwyer Painting
Kurt and I accepted an invitation to the Leadership Training this year and really had no idea of what to expect. We arrived in Baltimore on a Friday morning (the weekend after the NEC conference) and we went nonstop until Saturday afternoon; our heads were spinning with new information. During the time spent in the meeting center, we listened to PDCA staff and presenters speak about the history of the organization, the code of ethics, standards, policies, and bylaws. We looked at the PDCA Chapter Playbook, a tool designed to help members facilitate chapter meetings, events, and new member recruitment techniques; Libby Loomis walked the group through the PDCA website and the findapainter.com feature, and we talked openly about the future of the PDCA. Tony Kozak, among other things, handed out playing cards for each round of discussion and we each sat at the table that corresponded to the number on our card. This was an ingenious way to spread us out so that each attendee would meet PDCA members from all over the country. Above everything Kurt and I learned at this training, we took away a sense of pride for being members of the PDCA; we understand more now, that it is our responsibility to educate our customers to the PDCA standards and to recruit new members whenever possible. We were able to meet a diverse group of industry professionals and left Baltimore with a renewed excitement for the New Year. The Leadership Training presenters Jerry Howell, Tony Kozak, Ron Yarbrough, Richard Greene, Libby Loomis, Darylene Dennon, and Anita Dallas showed energy and enthusiasm in addition to their evident pride in PDCA. The group participation was particularly interesting; each member who wanted to participate was able to voice their comments and concerns. We were all encouraged to speak and most of us did! Kurt and I would recommend the Leadership Training to any PDCA member - it is definitely worth attending.
